The block heater plugs into 110 volts, to keep the engine from freezing overnight in extreme climates, or just to make it easier to start on very cold mornings. In some parts of Alaska and Minnesota temperatures can get as low as -60 F (-50 C) which will freeze regular anti-freeze.

I not aware that any USA vehicles that came factory with block heaters, although I expect they are dealer-fitted to cars sold in Alaska. I've seen a few here in Washington State, especially from the desert regions of eastern Washington, but they are owner-added. Seattle is protected from the Arctic air by high mountains (4000 m) to the east and the ocean at the west keeps things from freezing.

As your current avitar clearly shows.
I thought that block heaters were almost standard equipment on all new cars sold north of the Mason - Dixon line.

Yup, thats a block heater... got one in my A12, exact same spot

That engine looks very clean internally, looks like you got a good one.

i dont know what it is. this engine was from USA and im portuguese, we dont use this in here.
All my other engines dont have this.

The car were this engine was in, have air conditioning. maybe is from the ac.

This thing has got me going too. If you are going to dismantle this engine completely, then I would be most gratefull of you would carefully remove this item & let us know what's on the inside. It would seem to be either some sort of temperarure sensor, which air conditioners don't usually use, or perhaps it's a block heater, & thats an item I would like to know about.
Block heaters are cool, in a metaphoric sense you understand, & I would like to have one for my engine.
