well the saying's wrong. torque does not win races.
bhp is a descriptor of what work you can do in a given time with the torque you have, and the work you want a race car engine to do is accellerate. So power is a better descriptor of how it will accellerate then torque is. That is why power to weight gives a useful indicator of performance and torque to weight doesn't mean ####.

As you can see, if you don't have the torque, just rev the engine harder to make the power and gear it to suit, F1 anyone? Ahh crap, I can't believe I'm getting suckered into this. . . It is the area under the curve that wins races, well not really, but with a very peaky engine (High power, low torque) you need to keep it "on song" all the time. A nice fat torque spread is more forgiving, and drivable. "Your 2c is up, are you extending?" There is enough said on the 'net, over and out. . .
