Andy, I put 90,000 miles on my A12 turboed before I burned a piston. I used factory fogged pistons with a modified head at 11:1 compression and held it to 7 or 8 pounds boost most of the time. I had modified an SU carb, bolted it to the turbo with a 2" block of teflon and had a water/alcohol/octane booster injector. With more octane booster in, I could get 25 pounds boost from the turbo. I have had the sedan to 138 MPH with XZX 12 inch tires and 3.9 gear. It was a head turner and sounded like an Indy car. IROC Camaro's were a joke beside it.

Andy, You ought to come up to Bothell. That's my next project. I will making my own exhaust manifold for a turbo off a Dodge 1.6L engine. I have an idea on how I am going to make it. I have the A15 in my car right know but I think the setup is going to go on an A14 that I rebuilt. I think with the Higher RPM's I won't wreck something. The intake box for the carb is already done and I have already purchased an intercooler out of a Starion. I guess for now the dual down drafts are quite the eye catching setup. Everyone says "No side drafts?" Got the new carpet in over Christmas vacation so the car looks new on the inside. Someone from the NOTHWEST DATSUN ENTHUSIASTS (NWDE)has been hounding me to put it in their car shows. As soon as the paint goes on, it will be ready. Have fun building 1200's and never finish, life would be over! Ernie

Actually this next Friday I was going to try to go to a NWDE meeting. We should meet up there at the meeting in Kirkland. Also, we were supposed to race my sidedraft SU's against your downdraft DGV's for comparison. How big is the Starion intercooler? Will it be easy to find a place on the 1200 to put it? I was looking around for one, but haven't come across any yet. I did find a nice compact intercooler off of a Volvo station wagon that looked promising, I've got to find another. Anyways, we should hook up this next weekend. Let me know. -Andy

Intercooler looks good. My idea was to lay it flat down below in the front and to build a scoop to direct air into it. That way I do not have to tear up the front. Ernie

Andy, I work 2nd shift at your local aircraft company in Seattle. It's only temporary till the end of the month. If you come up early, I will be in my garage all morning until 1: 00pm. Who knows, maybe I'll be sick on friday? Anyways, if I am not there, ask for a lady named Tana. She's on the membership board. Hope to see you friday. Email me at n_cascade_mtns@hotmail.com Ernie

Ernie, I have class on Friday until 1:00 pm that I was planning on leaving right afterwards...who knows maybe I'll be sick as well? In that case I could leave here after 9 am...we'll see. I'm pretty pumped up about going to my first NWDE meeting. Are there a lot of Datsuns that show up? Any other 1200's? I just polished my wheels to make a good appearance, hopefully I'll see you there. -Andy

I know a place that sells complete super charger kits for A series and for L20B's as well. I was eventually planning to put one on a A15. The A series kit consists of all the manifoldes, linkages the super charger and a 1.75 inch SU all for a neat price of $2000, that is the whole kit, nothing else needed and he even puts it on for you. The guy said that you can crank the boost all the way up to 22psi (NO KIDDING) as this guy is in his 60's and has been working on datsuns for 30+ years, has even raced them and has been working on them since they fist come out into Aust.He says that he knows more and better stuff than whats in the datsun race manuals. 22 psi is all possible if all the relevant parts had been treated cope with it all (especially the crank)but it had been decompressed to about 7.5:1 compression ratio. I went into his work shop and saw a supercharged L20B, it was in a 1600 and it looks quite impressive. Whats the differance between the L20 and L20B as i have a L20B sitting in my 1200 wagon? My L20B came from a stanza. I payed $300 for mine with every thing on it also with the 4 speed, stanza front struts, lower control arms and ball joints, the whole steering setup, sway bar and tail shaft to suit. Not bad deal hey. I'm not sure exactly but either L20 or L20B comes in each of these cars: stanza or 200B. Stanzas come with L16's and L20B's like mine, i'm not sure if the 200B's had L20 or L20B's but there is some info fro ya.

The L20B has a different head than the Z20 (or LZ20). Basically the same block. There's an L20A, which is completely different- it's a six cylinder. Dave Lum www.datsuns.com
