Carby problem

Hey!

I'm new to this forum, and i feel the need to clarify that that is because A. i didn't know a website this cool existed, and B. because i am in dire straits.

OK, so I have a 1977 Datsun 120Y.
My dad and i have been maintaining it. Recently it blew the gasket head, so we fixed all that, and then yesterday sent it in for a service... just oils, brakes, gear box etc. Today, it was running alright, and then i went to drive it this arvy, and it was just like "putt putt broom broom putt"... if you know what i mean? It was hestitating, and kind of cutting out and then cutting back in? Dad said it sounds like fuel, but there is plenty of fuel. The mechanic did note on the report that he recommended a carby overhaul, but that it wasn't a pressing issue right now. Well, apparently, it is!! We thought it was the fuel pump in the carby, so just before close of business we got a carby kit and put that on, thinking that that would solve the problem, but it hasn't!!! Now we have NO idea?! And it isn't starting without one heck of an effort!!

SOMEBODY HELP!!!!!

I don't know much about cars, my dad is leaving tomorrow morning, and i have to move to another city on the weekend.

There's been a few carby problem thread in the last week or so - one issue that has kept coming up again and again is to change the fuel filter....cost 3 or 4 dollars and could solve the problem.

Firstly, that is a mint looking 120y so hold onto it. I have a 74 model that i've had a similar problem with.

I found that the first cause of the problem was the fuel system. The fuel was dirty and clogged the filter because of a rusting tank. Changed the tank, filter and flushed the lines. This helped alot because there was pieces of junk in the fuel lines that kept clogging intermittently. I suggest checking the fuel pump and flushing the fuel system, try running the car on bp ultimate.

Then again it could be more to do with the carby itself. I changed my stock carby to a weber 32/36 DGAV and found that it wasn't as renewed as i was told. It wasn't that hard to start but it did drive as you described yours. A few things were wrong and needed replacing: float, power valve piston and the throttle valve (primary or secondary i can't remember). The throttle valve was slightly bent and especially affected the car at idle and accelerating up to 2500 rpm. Check the sight glass to see if the carby is flooding.

Check your ignition system: leads, plugs, cap, rotor, coil and points. I found that my rotor and cap were excessively worn and contributed to the "putt putt broom broom putt" driving experience.

Thats about all i can think of at the moment,

These are great cars as I own 2 coupe models in excellent condition.
I agree with the others, replace your fuel filter even do your air filter at the same time.
