Ahhhh... we are not going to get into an argument about vehicle weights are we? Gordon Murray sees the benefit in any weight loss, be it 1% or 10%

Sprite is about 1500 pounds
Datsun 1200 is 1640*

Hmm, that is about 10% lighter, plus the A12 weighs less than the Sprite engine, or does it?

* see published weights in .Overview of the Datsun1200 HP and Performance

True - I hardly ever use 1st gear in my car with a 4 speed. Remembering that I have this fitted into an Austin Healey Sprite that weigh's bugger all... so there is not much weight to shift.
Man... now I'm leaning back towards fitting a 5 speed...

Yep that's another thing I noticed, it's more like driving a car now instead of a truck. First gear was close to unneccesary before the swap. It may be all in my head (haven't researched to see if the 1st ratios are actually different) but it feels like a lot more usefull acceleration. Maybe I'm just trying to sell myself on my desicion to swap?

5-speed fifth is useful at 40mph or higher (on a 1200 at least). It will give you better highway fuel economy and lower engine wear both. The B210s got 47 mpg with this trans, while 1200s with a smaller engine only got 38 mpg. Easier on the ears too.

However, the 63a is heavier, so it'll make your car a bit slower accelerating. So probably not the best for drag racing. You probably couldn't tell the difference on the street. But in-town fuel economy will suffer a bit. The 60- 5-speeds are also heavier, but not as much as the 63- series

The gearing will be very different from the 1200's gearbox. You may find you like the spread better, even for low-speed driving (or you may find it worse). The gear ratios are listed in the Tech Section 5-speed overview article.

I'm picking up my 5-speed tomorrow morning and I'm going to think about this one over the weekend and figure out what I want to do... over a few beers I'm thinking.

im pretty sure any gearbox from a 1200 will go on any A series engine. onyl thing is when going from 4spd to 5spd the speedo wire hits the tunnel. shouldnt be any dramas from 4spd to 4spd.
