#11 Re: Just got car running right now the turbo brakes (replacement turbo Q??)

I have had a turbo on this car for over a year now and I know what normal turbo noise is (its the sound you here just befor the tyres start smokin he he).
If you have ever heard a turbo scream you can clearly hear that somethings wrong, it sounds like i have a set of cam gear drives and 3 x 6:7:1 blowers under the hood its that loud that you cant hear my stereo at full bore when its trying to get on boost (everyone within 200m of the car looks as soon as they here it, it is sooooooooo loud people even look in the air to see if a plane is falling out of the sky lol ) . It is caused by the exhaust wheel hiting the exhaust housing.

The bearing wear is not always evident in a turbo that has been lying around for a while because they tend to dry out and tighten up abit, when i purchased the turbo there was hardly any axial play and no front to back play and definatly no fin dammage but now she is all freed up and full of oil the play is very evident.

The RB20 and RB25 turbos are non rebuildable units hey have to basicaly highflow it (put bigger wheels in) and modify the internals (bearings and cartridge)... Wish I had never got one now but im kind of stuck with it because everythings just been made to fit it... I should have listened to kegs and converted and got my manifold modified to fit a t28 or t25 but impatient me wanted somethin then and there that would bolt on to a t3 flange.....stupid stupid me oh well I learnt my lesson the expensive way I hope others learn from my expensive mistakes thats why im posting this.

I rang every person in the phone book they all said the same thing except the price was different GCG were the most expensive at $2100, garrett didnt want to know about it,
precision turbochargers at wetheril park were my pick at $1000- $1600 and most others talked a load of crap and tried to sell me a seccond hand piece of scrap metal like the one I already own.

What turbo repairers is everyone else using??

Nissan quote around $2000 for a replacement.

Check prices for new ones at GCG....I think you should be able to find a good new ball-bearing turbo for that price. Or search Ebay theres usually a couple of good ones on there.
For example - $550 brand new!!!

Not trying to start anything, but just sharing my personal experience with Precision turbos....They rebuilt and high-flowed a TO4 for me and a week later it fell apart and destroyed my new engine. I've also heard a few other people complain about them and an engine builder I use stopped using them and went to GCG. Could explain the price difference

Didnt know this about precision i heard they had a good rep if it does stuff up it will be returned throught the front window into the skull of the guy who built it....lets hope he does a good job!!!!

I understand that i can buy another turbo for say $500 to $1100 new or recoed or whatever but its still going to cost more in the long run (I should have changed turbos befor i spent all my money on a broken turbo and another that didnt fit) because the oil lines and the water lines will be different i will have to get the manifold flange changed and a new dump pipe made ie. =<$500 turbo + $500 worth of exhaust (quote from liverpool exhaust) + $60 or more for a tow to the exhaust shop and the list goes on.

I am hearing all the advice from you guys but this is the cheepest and easiest option for my current funds unless i wait a month or so and save the cash but then i dont have a car for a month and i need a car for work so thats not an option, so I will just have to put up with a bit of lag for a while untill i can save up and do it all properly when i have the time or another car to drive while the works being done.

Thanks for the advice I will let you all know how it goes when I get it back.

I have had Dynamic Turbochargers rebuild them for me in the past. They were located in Wetherill Park but I think they moved. Their prices will be similar. But they strip it, sand blast it and show you it in a box before they tell you it needs a rebuild. They do all that for free. lol.
The boys at SSS are good. They have swaped turbos for me when one I got off them had bad seals. They are pretty good that they understand guys buy stuff and the car doesnt even go for 6 months, so they still look after you.( my case anyway)

Now some might understand why someone went to this trouble.
