L series valves into A-series head.

Howdy People,
I'm doing an injected A14. I'm going to use an oval port head with larger valves. Usually people use L16 valves, but out of what a 1600 or a Stanza (are they the same)? What size are L16 valves? Thanks, much appreciated. Rhys

I know Jeff Taylor does this and I remember that he said the valves need to be cut down in length.
Maybe its worth a quick call to him

Yep, L16 valves cut down and re-grooved for collet. must use lash caps.

May I ask what diameter the L16 valves are?

I know a guy who had a worked A15 with L18 valves out of a 180b.
Thats all. I don't have any sizes or lengths though.

1600 valves, shortened and recolleted work good. not 100% if you can fit both the exhaust and the inlet together but upgrading to the exhaust valves make a big difference
and definitly use the cap thingys

Mine are 38 and 33
Length you cut them down to will be determined by 1. Lash cap thickness 2. Rocker ratio 3. Installed height required 4. Desired seat pressure And probably a few other things Unless your bunging them back in with all the factory rocker gear then it should be just orig valve length less lash cap thickness.

This may sound stupid, but why the lash caps? What do they do?

Early L16's used 38mm inlets and also some L14 engines. These 38mm valves fit A series heads easily even using original seats in some late 1500 heads.
The valves are shortened, new collet grooves cut to suit the desired installed height of the spring retainers and the ends turned down for lash caps unless the stem ends are hot metal sprayed with stellite. The valves will work if not capped or tipped but the stem ends soon mushroom. The lash cap provides a hard surface on the end of the valve for the rocker to rub on. In engines where the valve stem sizes have been reduced to aid gas flow, a cap is fitted to the end of the valve stem to increase the surace area for the rocker arm to rub on. You can view topic.
