Hi. I have just bought a Datsun 1200 coupe. It is my very first car and i love it.
It has the standard A12 1200 in it and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on some cheap and easy modifications i can do 2 it on a VERY small budget? it already has flow pipes, ROH mags, ramflo filter on it.
thanx

This article from the tech section shows an upgraded carby - a simple first mod.

See this link from the Tech Section

Get an a14 to start with, and some proper front struts/brakes.

If your looking cheap you might want to start a little modest, and work your way up to a engine change.

The carby is pretty easy, extractors are a litte harder as the exhaust probably wont fit anymore.

At least if you stuff the carby conversion you can put the old one back on.

If you haven't got front disc brakes that is another easy mod.

As are some nice 13" jelly beans I suppose.

Some stiffer springs?

A 120Y swaybar?

The list goes on, all these things could be done around the $100 or less mark...(maybe a little more for the carby)

Forgive my ignorance, but what are 'flows?'

OK as the king of cheap I'll chime in:

I would start with the suspension first. You can use 240Z springs with one coil cut out and lowering blocks in the rear. Use 7/8 front and 1/2 rear bar. Get a decent quality set of gas dampers , KYB's are usaully pretty cheap or check e-bay. Get some jelly bean mags and put on 175/60 13's these won't have clearance issues but will change the gearing.....more go but more RPM's on the freeway. We raced our 1200 with the cheapy suspenion set up first and a bone stock A12.
Later for the motor use the Weber 32/36 with a header(extractors) and 2 " exhaust. If you wanted to you could pull the head and put in stock A14 valves and use the GX dual valves springs............this set up ought to get you about 10 HP over stock.
Brakes , well Datsun brakes seem to be weak put in some good qaulity pads should help but if you get any sort of real power you'll need better breaks.
The above should keep you busy for about a year.
I will tell you I've run my 1200 at the track since 1989 and we are finally getting around to putting in an A15...........I bought every goody (used) that you see under the suspension part of the tech section first and I'm happy with the car. To be realistic you don't buy a 1200 for it's straight line speed although a turbo twin cam will solve that problem.
