i saw vg30's for about 800 to your door, not including tranny.

the realization I had is these engines stop being free or under $300

what does the front end of an awd nissan look like? never seen one really. and how does that frontend relate to an s13? Awd s13's exist? then an awd 210 might be possible.

So, IF I just happened to find one of these, for say...less than 500 USD. I should pick it up???

"2005 Infiniti FX35 all-wheel-drive (AWD) with Sport and Touring packages. Original owner, nonsmoker, no pets, no accidents. Pristine condition, always garaged at home and work. VQ35 3.5L V6 at 280 HP with Vehicle Dynamic Control, Traction Control System, and ABS. Snow mode switch."

Maybe swap in the AWD while it's there!

Come on, that engine alone is going to be 3-5K from a wreckers, right?

Yeah, that's the VQ35, it's not any bigger than the VG30 on the outside, but is lighter, more powerful and smoother. Either one is a tight fit in a B-car.

Typical V6 vibration is worse than inline four. Four-bangers have secondary unbalance as do 60 degree V6. 90-degree V6 have an annoying primary unbalance. The VGs are apparently 60 degree engines, but not smooth, at least the two I drove (in vibration). Maybe I got some bad ones.

VQ engines are 60 degrees and supposedly very smooth.

Many newer 90-degree V6 (Ford 3.8, GM 3800, etc) have balance shafts and are very smooth as a result. Even Porsche licenses the Mitsubishi balance shaft technology.

that may have been. I don't want to use that engine. too big and heavy, no room for exhaust.

First off, I think it's amazing how you can just reference with links like that. I have to spend a lot of time searchiong to find stuff like that. Okay, so I guess I could spend a little more time searching... I appreciate the link to the bagged 1200. I'm going to go with the assumption that since the 210 (B310, 120y) is a bit larger, it won't have many of the size related issues. I will go to the shop here in town and report back for sure though.

I suppose in terms of a timeline or order of attack, I need to figure out where the new drivetrain fits in. It's not all going to happen overnight or even in two months for that matter. I figure with the money I am saving on payments for my Blazer I sold I can invest a couple hundred each month with the occasional splurge. I really appreciate everyones feedback as I outline plans and gather information. I'm going to spend a few minutes to upload a few shots of the car so you can see what I am working with.

Airbagged Datsuns

You think the B310 has that good of balance? Seems unlikely, even many performance cars are not that good. B110 had 53/47, which is unusually good for a sedan.

Vibration. The ones I drove had typical V6 vibration.

Instead, why not use the all-aluminum VQ35 -- a lot more horsepower, weighs less, very smooth, better fuel economy ...

I would never mis-use anything.... :)

No, I want it for the handling and ride, plus for the 'cool' factor. I want to have the right look but not sacrafice driveability and function. I think that it would also help handle the little bit of extra weight from a larger engine. Okay, I'll be honest... How cool would it be to have airbags on that car?
