I initially ran a welded diff in my S13 for drifting and it does the job but it's still not as good as the proper 2-way LSD I fitted later. The LSD gave more control through transitions and made the car more predictable. It was easier on the driveshafts too!

I ran a locked diff in my 510. It's great for drag racing but that's about all. It actually drives pretty well on the street but you have to treat it with respect in the wet. I don't think I'd ever recommend it. When my SR goes in I'm fitting an LSD with it. Car's with IRS like the 510 can get away with an open diff up to reasonable power levels I find but live axle cars are just plain annoying, spinning the inside wheel out of corners. To a degree running lots of roll resistance up front with a soft rear setup helps a bit but I think for anything with a bit of go an LSD is essential.

The only car I've had with a locker is my AMC Javelin. It's really very agricultural

oh that's why, it's a bit too good ;)

but perfect for drifting ;0

I agree, but the $600 you mention would be $600 US, which is a bit more here [about $800] None the less, it's still the best overall compromise you can use.

The problem with welded lockers is the total lack of lateral [sideways] traction when you give it a bootfull in a bend in the wet & spin up both wheels. Thats when the rear swaps ends with the front,... & if you collide with another car on the street because of that, the cops will give you grief & the insurance company will try to wipe you like a dirty ars*hole.
Thats when you discover just how expensive a welded locker can be.

Save you pennies bite the bullet and get the LSD , you'll never regret it. I raced the coupe with an open diff and the H145 LSD that I found for my car made a world of differance. Locked rear ends are the worst even on the track , the one and only car I raced with a locker was rather abrut..........open diffs just drive you nuts , nobody has good enogh throttle control to deal with the constant wheel spin coming off corners , especially hairpins. On the street in the rain I'm sure using 2nd gear to start would help with an open diff but for $600 you can fix all your problems.

Go with the LSD mate. The wheelspin out of corners will annoy you more than being a few hundred dollars lighter in the hip pocket. It might be worth taking the centre to another rebuilder as they are usually fairly cheap to recondition.

I believe the BW78 came in heaps of falcons and even IRS commodores?

Might be worthwhile finding a luxury barge with auto and LSD, at least then it might still be fairly tight!

Guys - Thanks for the advice.

Looks like the Detrot is out.

I'll try to come up with the money on the LSD now to save having to pull the whole diff assembly out for rebuilding at a later date.
My wallet's got a permanent crease due to opening up for the ute anyway .

Sooty_grunter - I'm not too far away.... Graceville.
Keen to catch up & compare notes..... You have a PM.

The Detroit locker is not really a good idea as you really need to develop a whole new driving technique for it. I had one in a Falcon Van for evaluation for about six months & it had the ability to get you into more trouble than it could get you out of.
Great for 4WD'ing, or drag racing, but on the street, not really all that good.

A welded locker is illegal on the street, for good reason.
