I was thinking about rebuilding my a14 with a stronger botem end, eg. cossworth pistons balenced crank and rods ect, ect.
all for my suberched setup.
The thing i was wondering is will the losse of midrange torque be grately noticable from the a15 or would i be better off taking the car off the road so i can do this to the a15
chears

Apparently, the early A14's have forged cranks. I'm still not sure how to tell without stripping the motor. But this would be the best crank for your application.

Correct me if i'm wrong here, but I had thought that they ALL had forged cranks.
I know that they are all pretty bloody good, whatever their construction.

Ive got an A14 and A15 crank in the shed. Both look to be of the same construction and steel.

Ok. now I'm really confused. I'm sure it was you Dodgeman who told me and emailed me a picture showing two A14 cranks. One forged, and the other case. It's definately been on other posts on this site too. But I've always been a little reluctant to believe it myself. Can anyone else clarify this issue please ??!!?!

There was a member that came on with some pictures of his A14 crank that had been polished, etc. & compared it with another A14 crank that was heavier in construction & weight. This extra weight did not add to the strength, just the weight.
Both cranks were regarded as 'good', but for performance applications, the lighter one was regarded as 'better'
I do not recall if one was cast or not.

EDIT
Ahhh, there they are.

This is a link to that thread.

I thought I'd seen the paragraph in the tech section - directly addressing your question.

What's Better? A14 or A15?
It depends on what you mean by 'better':

* A14 often have better availability, meaning you can find one at an inexpensive price.
* A15 has 7% more capacity than the A14, meaning an automatic power increase in low and mid-range RPMs, all else being equal
* A14 and A15 stock bottom ends can both rev to 8,500 rpm so there's no advantage there.
* Since both use the same cylinder head, there is little top-end power advantage with either engine

So there you go!
