I was shopping around today at several local wreckers. I found a 5spd gear box, 1:1 final drive, 60 on the side, smooth case. what is it?
It was in a the back of a van.

Now here is the deal I have a 5spd DOGLEG in the car now. I dont use 5th gear ever.

Do I dare swap it out? I do want to open it up and inspect it first, replace bearings and such. It should have a closer gear ratio, right?

I know I can sell the thing (dogleg) for a fair penny too!

Any thoughts?

If you are absolutely sure that it is a 1 to 1 gearbox, & you are not using fifth gear in your current overdrive box, then clean & strip this one & check it for wear & damage, after all, it was in the back of the van for a reason, right? [it is a car gearbox isn't it?]

If all is good, then give it a freshen up with some bearings, synchro rings & small parts as required, & swap it into your car.
Sell the OD box to help defray your costs.
This way you get a fresh & tight box, you get to use all five gears, enjoy the drive, & save a buck on the deal through low purchase price & the sale of the OD box.
Sounds like a bargain to me.

the 1-1 fifth boxes are fantastic to drive, nice close ratios right through the range ... great for keeping the revs in the right power range.

Dodgeman- I have looked into that, and the bill for genuine synchro's & bearings is around $1100 AUD not the casual freshen up you'd think!!

Have you done a gearbox rebuild? are there aftermarket bearings & sinchro's available for the 5 speed 60 series?

The 60 series five speed was a standard fitment in some US models, so I presume that parts to service these transmissions will be much less difficult to locate there & hopefully, much less expensive.
Keep in mind that Bluemax lives in the US.

I have not yet done a rebuild on the five speed, but I hope to be able to ship my 56A box off to Ferral within the next month or so. Yes, I have braced myself for a bill that reflects the rarity of a thirty something year old gearbox overhaul, particularly when the box & all the parts for it were never sold here.
To add to the financial burden, I hope to make some changes to it if we can source the right parts, & that may involve the purchase of one or even two damaged gearboxes if they are available.
It's only money.

Boofhead is absolutely right, the 'proper' five speeds are fantastic to drive, particularly on a winding road in the hills where you can keep the engine right in the power band. It's a great feeling.

Yes.
If you contact your local aftermarket bearing suppliers with the right bearing codes they should be able to source the bearings for you from Asia. Not Asian made bearings but good quality stuff. This is what I did when modifying my 60 series straight cut box and you will save a heap of dollars.

Bluemax, write down all the numbers cast on the case, and the numbers stamped on the top edge. Let us know. Also, if you can get pics to us it will help. I'm sure many of us are very curious about the box you have found.

It has 60 on one side #9 on the other and
F A ... 9Y46013 on the top of the bellhousing. Took the day off work and went to another yard I have never been to,

Guess what I found?

4 more 5 spds, two of which are the Dog leg trans. Several 4 spds, a couple of automatics. All of them are still in the cars. I did not take any tools with me but I WILL be returning.
