#1 Help! Clunking sound. No idea!
ddienes Posted on: 2006/6/27 9:03
As I'm driving down the road when I am lightly pressing on the throttle and lightly on and off the throttle I get a metalic clunking sound that keeps clunking until I change the throttle. Sometimes its hard to adjust the throttle to get it to do this.

I checked under the car and to my un trained eye everything appears to be normal.

Is the diff or shaft buggered? or is something loose?

Any ideas on things I can check or do would be really appreciated.

Thank-you

I had the same problem in my sunny wagon.
Sounds like it could either be your uni joints in the tailshaft are worn and knackered or theres to much play in the diff...
Pity the uni's arent replaceable in these tailshafts so they need to be drilled out. Best thing to do would to inspect all parts to see if their out of factory specs

Does it happen on deacceleration also? And if your coasting (no foot on the gas) does it make this sound also?

sounds like universal joint to me, or perhaps broken gearbox X-member rubber?
Get under the car and pull on stuff and try and replicate the noise. my 720 was doing something similar and it turned out the front uni was allowing almost a quarter of a turn...

sounds like the uni joints in the tailshaft.
they are a common problem with datto 1200's and 120y's.
It should make the noise more when changing gears, if you have a manual car that is.

it does it coasting too, not just under accel.

does that help narrow it down?

Thanks

i had a look and a tap under the car, i can't see anything a miss

is your exhaust hitting on the chassis anywhere? that can cause some rather weird metallic noises

my fuel door was not held shut and would sometimes open and shut and make an odd noise.

exhaust hitting could be a possibility.

here's a new scary noise...

got my new brakes and struts etc... drove for many 1000's miles, then yesterday, in line at a drive through front brakes started making weird noise, like the caliper was hitting something, slowly drove a block back home to see what happened...

I didn't tighten the brake disks to the wheel hubs when i sent them to the machine shop... got it all back, mostly assembled, brake disks mounted and wheel bearings installed ( supposedly ready to install... ) short story, one of the 4 10x1.25 bolts backed out enough to hit the brake caliper backing plate and bent!

replaced it and torqued all the bolts properly then checked the other side where i discovered the same thing!

it's my fault... that's why i was out in 100 degree sun fixing it.

be very careful till you know what's making the noise. it could be something bad.
