Hi guys was wondering how many turns lock to lock in a steering box off a 1200 ute 74 b120 people get? I'm getting 2 and a 1/2. Box is off the car at the moment so I wanna make sure everything is right before I put it back on, just doesn't seem like many, but its off the car so its hard to tell.

thanks

There was only 1 sort of steering box on the B110/B120, with exception to the Nissan competition item that I believe exists.

While you are looking at the steering, check the sector shaft bushings. The sector shaft connects to the pitman arm. This is a big source of wear on newer and older steering boxes. The factory packed many of it's steering boxes with grease to stop leaks down the sector shaft, and the grease can starve these bottom bushings of lubrication from the 500mls of oil in the steering box.

If these brass bushings are worn, they are a pain the ass to replace, but will greatly improve the freeplay in the steering.

My Nissan Factory Manual say 15:0 to 1 ratio.

Remember, turns are at the steering wheel and should be less than at the box (as the steering linkage adjustable stopper limits it).

Quote:
Steering is by recirculating ball system with a ratio of 15.1 to 1, calling for 3.3 turns of the wheel from lock to lock.
WHEELS, March, 1970

Quote:
Steering type....recirculating ball
. Overall ratio..............15.0:1
. Turns, lock-to-lock...........3.4
Road & Track Road Test (November, 1970)

Quote:
STEERING
Recirculating ball, 4 turns of steering wheel from lock to lock.
MOTORMAN ROAD TEST - DATSUN 1200SSS
From MOTORMAN magazine, November, 1972 pages 15-16

It's enough to make me think car magazines don't measure very precisely ...
