Man O Man !!! I've done all but flog this thing with a sledge hammer ! I was warned that ball joints are sometimes difficult to separate but this is INSANE !!
Are there any tricks i can try at home or should i just take it to someone to try and press it out ?
Can I hit the joint REALLY hard or do i run the risk of breaking something?

If you are not using a ball joint seperator you are flogging in vain. Best tool in the arsenal when hunting for those elusive stanza struts at the wrecker!!

DARN !
There is a tool called a ball joint seperater!!!
I'm gonna get me one of those.
The struts are comming along well. brakes will be skimmed by Wednesday. Calipers overhauled. Otherwise just a general clean.
I can't wait to get it all under the car.
I'd do the install myself but I'm not that confident yet.
And I figure let the experts do that.
Will I need any certificate for that work in Queensland ?

I hope that you are not just belting it with a hammer. If you don't have any other tools, you will be better off with TWO hammers & preferably an assistant with a long bar or screwdriver.

Loosen, but do not remove, the nut.
Place a heavy hammer firmly against one side of the steering arm next to the tapered shaft.

Place the bar in a position so that some pressure can be applied to separate the ball joint or rod end from the arm. Do not bust a gut here, just a good firm pressure is enough. Leaving the nut on loosely prevents sudden surprises when it comes away.

Smack the opposite side of the steering arm quite smartly with the lighter of your two hammers.

The objective is to distort the shape of the tapered hole with a shock wave just long enough to separate the two parts & a little leverage is a big help.
If you just wack it with one hammer, you only damage things.

If you are working with the suspension ball joint, it might be better to remove the steering arm & place it in a press as these are a difficult shape to do with a couple of hammers.
DO NOT use heat, that is, keep the Oxy torch away from steering & suspension components.

P.S. I don't recomend placing your balls between two hammers unless great pain & celabacy is what apeals to you.

No luck thus far.The ball joint I'm working on will connect to the bottom of the strut. I think i will try to track down a seperater.
I'll get someone to get some pics taken for me.
Ive taken some with my mobile phone and saved them to "my pictures" but there seems to be a problem when i come to load them onto the site.
