Unfamilia - that was Jim Richards and the quote was "You're all a pack of assholes."

Stirlingmac - I was very surprised that the safety car was deployed after Richards sand trap expedition considering where his car ended up. The cynic in me wondered how much the ratings would improve with a Ford and a Holden going head to head over the last few laps.........

exactly - it was hardly presenting a danger in that position, and anything still going fast enough by the time it got there to be a potential risk, would have issues wit the fence/wall anyway!

and then not to deploy the safety car with 2 laps remaining with a crashed car in exactly the same position as a previous safety car period earlier in the race The race was a stage-managed farce in that respect - ie to produce an exciting finish.

The most fitting ending would have been for the race to finish under safety car - the Chysler deserved to be first across the line as much as anyone else!

either that or for the safety car to have crashed too - and he had a try coming out of pit lane! With everyone else crashing, it would have been very amusing to see the safety car in a decent bingle too!

I think it was 16 finishers - and these are supposed to be the level 1 teams! I've never seen so many single vehicle accidents at Bathurst before!

and only 31 starters - Group A and Group C used to see grids lined up back around Murray's corner! V8 Supercabs suck

I found an old AutoAction from the 1992 Bathurst race, with a story on the GT-R's lead up and race. I'll check the lap times tonight. V8 Supercars are faster, but so they bloody well should be with their aero packages, lighter weight and not being restricted to certain factory production parts and suspension pickup points!

actually it was "I thought Australian race fans had something, but this is a disgrace. You're a bunch of arseholes."

after enduring a hostile reception on the podium for the 2nd year in a row and having beer bottles thrown at them.

in 1992 after having their minimum weight increased to 1500kg!!! in the leadup to Bathurst. they were restricted to 1.3bar boost, and loosing a further 0.1bar boost at Bathurst due to altitude which Gibson claimed to be worth about 40bhp, the Skaife/Richards GT-R qualifyied on pole with a 2:13.820, and was the only car in the 13's during normal qualifying.

The Toohey's top 10 was a different story! The DJR Sierra, who like all other turbo cars was free to run whatever boost they want, turned the wick up for the Top10 Shootout and got pole. The GT-R ended up in 3rd with Skaife not able to equal the earlier qualifying times.

V8 Supercabs are 1350kg, have massive areo advantages and aren't hamstrung by having to use any factory parts or suspension pivot points or anything like that. The pole time this year was 2:06.9764 = 6.8436 faster than the production based GT-R, or in rallying terms, 1.1sec per km faster after 14 years of development into a silhouette series bearing no mechanical resemblance to the production car, and with massive aero packages and 150kg less weight.

Take the restrictor off and drop the extra ballast from the GT-R and I know which car I'd put my money on!
