#1 Building Morry ute with 1200 Engine
Monkeypuzzle Posted on: 2006/11/27 23:36
Just started on a wee project, I have an early sixties Morris Minor Ute that i'm rebuilding but wanted alittle more power and flexibility, I have an 82 C20 vanette that is going to be the donner vehicle for engine, loom, running gear...well pretty much everything but the looks.

Has anyone done a similar conversion (very common here in NZ) or know of anyone having done one that can give me a few hints to make the job easier?

You may already have seen this site: Morry NZ Club Looks like a good starting point.

There is a UK Minor being built with all the running gear from a SR20DET Silvia. There is a lot of info here re: body mods and transplants: World Scene

I spent many years bouncing around the hill country of West Otago in Morry utes - they were so underpowered that we spent most of our time crawling sideways around hills - to try to go straight up meant running out of revs in first halfway up a slope. Especially with a couple of ewes on the back! But the good thing was that they didn't have enough power to dig themselves in up to the axles!

Cheers, i'll contact him.

Any advice at all about 1200 engines etc will be much apreciated, as we build we'll obviously get to the stage where we want max power/performance so all advice regarding the engine will be awesome.

"edit" oops...didn't see the quote button when I first replied...Cheers Sidedraught.

Yeah great little units aren't they...I heard somewhere that Datsun used the Morrie 1000 as the inspiration for the 1200...does anyone know if this is true??Quote:

Well I think the Datsun A series is based on the BMC A series. but thats about it as far as simliarities between the cars.

As for infomation on performance mods for an A12, that is really the basis of this site, probably best to start in the tech section as it is very comprehensive.

I meant to reply to this but mistakenly started a new thread! See 'Morris engine conversion' or get all the info you need at....

The A series is relatively easy to fit as the Japs used the BMC motor with some modifications. Check out the Morris Down Under Forum for some useful help. Some of the changes are to the front and rear cross members. The cut down Morris engine towers are repositioned to take the 120Y engines mounts. You need to use two drivers side mounts and turn one around for the passenger side. Small section cut out of the engine bay floor pan to accomodate the oil filter and depending on the tranmission used changes to the rear mount and the floor. I have just changed from a A12 to A14 in my Morris.
