Has anyone seen how the Economonitor worked. That's the round gauge next to the speedo in the early car. I think a series of light rings changed colour with the change in engine vacuum, as it was connected to the manifold by a rubber hose. The only Sunny I had that had one was my early (11/78) Panel Van, & it didn't work. Changed it out for a Coupe dash with a tacho, then a complete late model dash from door to door with the late coupe cluster.

here's a photo of JDM early B310, it looks like this type of ECONO METER is just a green light for light throttle pressure like newer cars have (my 2009 has an "Eco" light)

The B210/120Y version was a full vacuum gauge with green and yellow zones

it being the favorite A gata Dattosan in Japan vs earlier 1200
Did the 310 really have more racing success than the 1200 in japan?
Thats the only I could muster why it could be so popular....

I suspect the B110 is more respected/legendary, while the B310 is more currently available thus currently more popular ...

aint it the truth -- in USA high fuel economy isn't worth much

41 mpg and about the lowest price car. 41 mpg and that's without overdrive (which was only available at extra cost)
