ok update.

appears that the clutch fan is disengaging when parked on an incleine even at idle.... this is while facing up hill. Went to the mechancs, did pressure test on cooloing system. all good, no leaks and thermostat opens up, checked timing made sure it is set to 15deg... all good, so nothing else could be the cause,

it must be airflow throught the radiaiator (or lack there of) or a blockage in a water gallery (dont have the flowmaster franchise in melbourne so dont know how to clean that one out)

will wait to try non clutch thpe fan with a temp shroud.

15 deg? what setup do you have? sounds a bit buch for a std setup

set up is a15, twin sus, elec ignition, mild cam (80/40) extractors and 2 inch exhaust...

so can easily handle 15deg timing, any less than 12 and idle is too rough any more runs the risk of detonation...

What radiator are you running, I have a new A15 slight cam (30/70 me thinks) std carb exaust etc etc and mine also runs warm on std radiator. (hot day is up to 3/4 on dash guage, normal running just over half)

EDIT: sorry jusr re-read original post, you have gimmi radiator, I am interested how this turns out for you as I was going to swap to that radiator.

trying gem radiaitor now, had a recoed ex speedway twin core radiator and temp readings were the same. So radiator is not the isssue. Stock radiator just about boiled with 35deg days plus. on 25deg days it got to 210 on the freeway.


heres an image of the temp readings and speed. this was after 2 mins of 100kmh

hi unfamilia i can't remeber but if clutch hub is bolted together you can service it as i stated in previous post go see mechnic[or could do your self]...p.s if lumping with lower idle with ing timing reduced check your mixture setting could be to rich at idle???

well looks like head gasket for sure now, steam from oil filler cap.

It idles rich withthe sus but with the cam its hard to get it ideal so would rather a little rich than lean, shouldnt wash the bores too much.

at least i know the rest of the system is up to scratch now, checked everything else in the car.

put original thermostat back in to se if that was the cause, same temps so thats ok.

ok latest update, drained the radiator again, filled with water, flushed again, drianed filled with coolant.

according to local radiator guy as ive used 2 different ypes of rtv sealant, one black on thermo housing and clear on water pump, there is probaly a chmical reaction with the cheaper rad coolant i used.

he recomended this before pulling apart for head gasket.
ALso noted the fan blde pitch on the clutch fan looked wrong.

ends up being the previous owner mounted it backwards to clear the radiator as it protudes further forward. mucked around with moutning and guess what....

temps droped 15deg f when utp to 80 kmh. have to try on freeway but looks like its solved almost (touch wood) hopefully no damage has occured from running hot since it was rebuilt 4 years ago and the previous owne doping 30,000kms like this in hot weather.
