I'v fitted a CA18DET with gearbox attached to my ute, just take both crossmembers out, shifter, radiator, intercooler ect. Lift the car over the motor gearbox, cover for protection, and lift it up with block and tackle and trolly jack under the back of the box. Easy and no scratches.

Its possible, if you have someone to push down on the gearbox to clear tunnel and rad support. Main problems are crank pulley on rad support and water outlet on the head against firewall.
I've never tried putting them in seperately, dont like having to crawl under in the dirt and oil and #### lol

if i put a block and tackle on the 'rafters' in my shed the whole thing would come down like a pack of cards. i think the previous owner of the house built it for functionality not durability.
im gonna try the jack and blanket method i think and see how i go. i may be able to get my brother away from his computer games to assist for a few minutes while i drop it in. damn computer games robbing these young minds!

but how much heavier is the toyota box? its about 15kg i would have said. i just put one in my ute and i had a mate under there helping me hold it up. if your doing it by yourself then try it as one piece. when i put my engine in i already had the extractors on it, so i had to lean it back a fair way for it to clear. i just made the chain that goes to the back lug longer, and the chain on the front lug shorter (essentially tilting the engine backwards).
