My car has the engine and transmission from a datsun 1200, I see there are many engines listed on this site, is there a way to tell which it is without taking the head off and measuring the bore/stroke?

behind the distributor under the spark plugs and next to the fuel pump, there is an id tag and depending on what it starts with eg a12 a12a a13 a14 a15 is what you have. im guessing that you have an early series a12. the radiator shroud is very interesting indeed.

That picture is either an A10 or pre-1974 A12.

The engine ID is on the flat part at the back of the engine (on the block under the #4 spark plug). See:

A12 Engine ID Mark

The newer engines have the ID by the distributor. But this is an older engine.

It's a Datsun 1200 engine [1970 to '73]

Ah there must be some distinguishing observable feature between the A10 and A12. What is it? We americans have never seen the A10 engine

Interesting indeed, will be fun making that top hose fit.

The engine number is A12 401743

Are there plenty of parts for this engine or should I look to take it out and go with something else? All I know about it is that it was purchased from a salvage yard in Dec 1973 and put it my car. I don't think it was ever finished and sat untouched for the past 33 years.
