Are there plenty of parts for this engine
Yes, plenty. Every part is still available. Nissan still make these engines in South Africa. You can buy brand new (A14/A15) engines in America. All the common parts are available through regular auto parts stores.

They are a durable, light, smooth running engine.

Is the 1200's transmission a 4-speed? If so is there a 5 speed that will mate with the A12?

Ah there must be some distinguishing observable feature between the A10 and A12. What is it? We americans have never seen the A10 engine

1. Carb has provision for center stud. A10 had clamp to secure air cleaner.
2. Rocker cover. Has fitting on the side to secure fuel line. A10 cover did not have this & early A10 covers did not even have the Datsun name pressed in.
3. Fuel pump. This is the definitive 1200 pump. The smaller one in your ID picture is actually a carry over from the A10.
4. All engines with PCV used a sealed oil filler cap, like the one in the picture. The A10 used 'draught tube' ventilation & a taller, painted, ventilated oil filler cap. It had a skirt around the rearmost portion to help direct air up & into the cap.

Now, in the 'very hard to pick' basket

5. Temp sender unit has a push-on electrical fitting while A10 used a threaded fitting with a small brass bolt with hex head. This is unique to the A10.
6. A10 has a stroke that is 11mm shorter than the 1200 & the deck of the A10 block is just about flush with the bellhousing. This can be seen where the colour changes between the alloy head & the grotty block.
The 1200 deck is just a little higher than the top of the bellhousing.
