My first car was a '65 Plymouth Fury. We had great fun with a similar trick, only it was not a flame thrower, it was a fuel/air bomb. After the car was warmed up you would drive up to 40mph, turn off the key, let the car coast down to 35mph, then turn the key back on. BOOM!!!!! A fireball a couple of feet wide would shoot out the end of the exhaust accompanied with a very loud explosion.
...
We pulled this stunt in a 1949 Ford Pilot [British postwar version of 1936 Ford V8] These had a dual exhaust as standard & we were coming past the Gaol in Parramatta.
Ignition off, madly pump throttle & pull out choke. Then choke in, throttle part open & ignition ON.
The resultant explosion split both mufflers wide open & gave it a throbbing exhaust note to be proud of. I have no idea what the reaction of the guards in the towers was as we didn't hang around to find out, but we had visions of finding bullet holes in the back of the car when we got home, but fortunately, ... no.
When we stoped laughing at the condition of the mufflers, we all chipped in & bought two more used ones from the wreckers, but stayed well clear of the Gaol in that car ever after.
