hello
in my 76 datto you i have a collapsable steering coloum... when i bought it i found that when driving down the road the hole steering coloum came out or when going over a bump.. i have taking the steering wheel off and notice the top bearing was loose i tighted that but it still pulls in and out. this also affects starting the car ???

i am so confused i will just drop it off at a steering joint and see what they say..

i have a funny feeling its the sheer pin

It would indeed seem that the plastic pins in your steering column have sheared. [there are two]
I suspect that this may have happened when some unwise, but very strong person, who didn't read the manual, tried to remove the steering wheel without using the correct puller. He very likely just loosened the nut & gave it an almighty heave. That would do it without collapsing the outer tube.

These pins are not listed at all in the parts book at all, just the steering shaft assembly, so it would seem there was no intention by the factory that the shaft, once the pins were broken, should ever be repaired.

Assembly, Shaft-Column Part No. 48820-H1021.

The method of dissasembly & repair is all laid out in the Gregories Manual for Datsun 1000/1200's I highly recomend that you get one. They are frequently available on ebay at very affordable prices.

With any luck, the shaft might still be available through Nissan as they were used in Utes untill the early 80's in Australia.

A lot of hot roders replace the pins with knitting needles when they modify there columns. Aparently the needles are very close to the original plastic pins.
