hi guys my vanette is playing tricks on me. i finished my day at work and the car wouldnt start but it would kik over once the ignition was on to turn the stater motor but as soon as it sprung back to the ignition it stops. then it would start after about 10 mins but wont idle, so this morning i started it and it was fine. it idle'd and drove fine then after about 10 mins it stoped idling again. i cant work this out. has anybody got any ideas? if this means anything its a 86 A15 vanette import (aparently). it has 8 seats elec locks, windows and sunroof

My new sedan has a similar problem where it cuts out, doesnt matter what revs it will just cut ignition for about half a second to 2 seconds. I have replaced coil/ballast resistor/condensor etc.
I think its the ignition switch, its just hard to trouble shoot as it ran all day yesterday no hiccups but today on the way to work it cut about six times.

A long dead thread but it was probably the coil and/or ballast resistor. The power bypasses the ballast resistor and goes straight to the coil when the key is turned to the 'start' position for easier starting, but when the key goes back to 'on' the power flows through the resistor and then into the coil. A faulty ignition switch usually does a few things like the engine wont fire when the key is turned all the way to the 'start' position stop (turning the key just enough to engage the starter usually gets you around that), the key will sometimes jam halfway between the 'acc' 'on' and 'start' positions, and then usually shortly after that the spring inside the switch will collapse and when turning the key to 'start' the key won't spring back to the 'on' position.
