Hello all long time member first time caller :D

Well I tried lowering my 12hundy a few months ago, with no luck :( The U-bolts where to big for the axle and the the lower bracket. I was thinking of heating them up with a torch to get them to fit. I wanted you guys opinion first though. Would this be an unsafe rought? I can't look at my car another day at the current rid hight..... pictured bellow I cut the front sprigs and took a leaf out of the back just to tie myself over...

I'm facing the same dilemma. Two inch u-bolts are not really available in the states it seems.

I think bending some slightly larger u-bolts would be fine if you only had to do it a little bit. I've read that people do that for other cars with strange axle diameters. Don't quench them in water if you use a torch, it will mess up the temper of the metal. The HELP! brand, commonly available at auto parts stores, makes some 2 1/4 u-bolts but you'll have to get your local parts place to look them up and order them.

There are places that will custom make u-bolts to your specs, like this place:
www.uboltit.com

What lowering blocks are you using? Did you have to modify them?

I used Betts truck company to make me some u-bolts for the back of mine. They are located in Oakland Ca. I brought my old one in and said I just needed some longer. As far as lowering blocks, in some low rider truck mags you can buy blocks with grooves on the side of them, so they can fit the 2" or so wide leaf springs, before all I could find were 2 1/4 inch wide blocks which posed a problem when trying to fit the u-bolt.

Cool thanks Ed. I actually found that the belltech lowering blocks stocked by my local parts store are narrow enough. I'm just worried about the locating pin/hole in the center.

I just had some new U-Bolts made here in SA by Industrial Springs. $15 each with washers and special nuts.

Defiantely the way to go. Never attack them with a torch.

You wont be able to get it that low with blocks anyway. The spring perch bit will hit on the inside of the wheel, and will be too close to the ground. Maybe a combination of blocks+reset leaves would get it that low, but I'm not sure.
