Right!!! I know what you mean. I guess i will just have to wait and see what size the struts are and go from there. If they are bigger i will be shortening the strut body anyway and i'll just have to decide what insert to use then.

If they are shorter than the 1200 struts then all the better and i'll just use the strut tops and stanza steering stuff and just bolt them straight in.

The main reason for the change is because my standard 1200 struts are worn and stiff and the stanza discs that are on there are not that great. Also the plans to get it lowered. So i figure i will just do the whole lot in one go and then look at putting in a boosted sunny or 180b brake master cylinder to improve the blubird discs, which should be better standard than the stanzas anyway. Also just want to tighten the steering a bit.

Thanks for the help though mate and i'll let you know how i get along.

Cheers
Trav

Actually i just found this on martybugs, this is what BigD sent me in an email a few days ago too. Maybe i got confused about needing to shorten the srtrut. Will have to chat to BigD and find out......

Bluebird Struts:
Matthew Cooley has got Bluebird struts on the front of his 1200 coupe that he races in New Zealand.

His struts are off a 1981 Bluebird ZXE 2.0 litre, and are 10" vented disks, 17mm wide. He removed the spring, bottom seat and top seat from the Bluebird strut, and used those off the 1200 strut. A thread mount was installed onto the bottom mount so that the height could be adjusted.

Sunny lower control arms were used, because they fit the 1200 cross member. The 1200 sway bar was retained, and Sunny castor rods were used.

The strut conversion results in an extra 50mm front track width, and gives a much larger braking area. The 1200 master cylinder has been retained, but Matt may go to a Sunny boosted one, or a 180B master cylinder sometime.

For racing purposes, the front suspension is fitted with shortened VW Golf KYB Sport shocks (front and rear) and Mitsi V3000 King Springs on the front.

It doesn't mention anything about shortening the struts so your probably right. And yeah i guess i will have to go for the sunny radius rods. All i have to do is maybe look at changing the springs if i want it a little lower than it ends up being to match the 2 inch lowering at the back that i plan to do.

Thanks again
Trav

Good stuff, just so you know, Sunny radius rods / lower arms and steering arms are the same as Stanza items.

On a side note, if you want to upgrade to ventilated rotors and calipers the R31 discs and calipers bolts straight onto a bluebird strut. All the boys with bluebirds do this upgrade as there are millions of R31's in wrecking yards.

pretty sure that side note was on the bottom on my post....so was the sheer load spacer thing
does no one read the long posts i make
bluebird brakes are pretty average really....same as stanza stuff so you wont see an improvement in the stopping power
unless you find the ones with vented rotors and what not, but most are just the 250mm solid rotors

ok.......forget wasting your time with the strut inserts, you are going round in circles really
the bluebird struts will go into a 1200 using the 1200 strut tops....ive done it they fit on the strut inserts
THERE IS NO POINT SHORTENING BLUEBIRD STRUTS(unless you do it all yourself so the cost is nothing), you might as well just go buy the whole r31 setup and be done with it
that way you will have bigger brakes shorter struts and will be able to fit wider front wheels, you will however need to run adjustable camber tops to maintain camber

bluebird struts are around the same height as 200b struts

Pfft, why read when I know everything already.

And I dont see a sheer load reference in your post, also I know we've talked about it before though, do you know if the bluey struts are shorter than R31?

BTW I found a later model 120y that im going to see on wknd, Im hoping the lower arm stuff will be there so I can take some photos for reference.

You must have just edited that in...

You're right, I didn't read that post to the bottom. Maybe you need to include more emoticons to keep my attention
