The detent balls are spring loaded balls which pop into a notch on the shaft when a gear is selected. I supose they help to hold the box in gear. If you back off the screws that hold them in, there will be less force to overcome to engage and disengage the gears.

sssute would you be able to put some pics of yours up?
ang94541 would you recomend raising the pivot point 1.250"/31.75mm or maybe abit less?
Also when you say "I backed off on detent balls and all was good", what do you mean by that?

The throw is so short, it's difficult to go from second to third and from fourth to fifth.

I've gotten used to it now.
It was harder to shift because you have less leverage. I backed off on detent balls and all was good.

I made this at work during my apprenticeship. There's no way I could get away with that now.
EDIT: I raised the pivot point 1.250"/31.75mm. I somehow did the math before I made it. I compared the different lengths... i forgot. I think I still have my notes somewhere.

Stumpy box shifter is the same as L-series/FJ box shifters right?

Great timing, i have just finished making short shifters for the stumpy box, it reduces the shift from 135mm to about 90mm. If the shift was any shorter then that the gear box would not like it.
Im half way through making the kit to fit most of the aseries boxes, it will include new bushes and bottom cap.

the higher you lift the pivot (fulcrum) point means there is more "stick" below it ... this means that the end in the box will move further with less movement at the top (gearknob) needed.
did a quick search and found an eeaaaaaarly thread by feral and he suggests about 1cm lift ... i'd probably look at up to 2cm max.
with the amount of play in an Aseries box i think making the shift movement too small would actually make it harder to find the gears properly due to the 'slack' shift pattern the box already has in regards to definite gates for each gear

He added 1.25"/31.75mm to his one and the shift went from 6-7" to about 3".
Is it the more you add to the shifter the less you have to move it?

Well if i can find a spare shifter ill see what i can do. How do u reckon i would be able to work out how much i would need to add to it to make it roughly 50% shorter?
