got any more info?

Have you got spark?
Have you got fuel?
Have you got compression?
Does the car run but just not idle?
How old/what motor?

Yes it runs, but doesnt idle. Its a 1400 motor. Ive checked timing etc.replaced the base gasket on the inletmanifold also. It starts alright but with choke assistance. The idling goes up and down - very uneven almost floating?

Does the carb have a wire with a spark plug looking thingo coming out the front? If it does thats the anti-diesel solenoid, it needs to be plugged to the positive on the coil, if it doesnt make a click sound when plugged in its shagged and needs to be replaced.

If it clicks it is working. Does it run better now?

Theo the needle is inside the solenoid. If its not working you can cut the tip of the needle so the car idles but dont remove the whole thing. The solenoid stops fuel going through the idle circuit of the carb stopping it running on when hot, when the ignition is off the solenoid has no power and the needle is seated stopping passing fuel.
