Yeah if you need anymore positive reinforcement I too would recommend L18 or L20 for the 120Y - with the 180B crossmember and struts you can't go wrong!

You could probably buy a Datsun 180B for $500 or so - then spend around $300-$500 replacing gaskets and cleaning up the motor. As long as you had all the tools you need - otherwise you might be up for another $500 in tool.
What's that roughly $1500? Spot on!

I would do the Lseries conversion as well. i am doing it and is soon to be finished for real. this wet weather on a motorbike is stupid!
use the 180B crossmember and Lower Control Arms, 180B Castor rods. 120Y Gearbox crossmember. 180B Radiator stanza struts or 120Y struts with sunny hubs leone discs and volvo 4 pot calipers. shortened tailshaft. and you should be away. you can find 180B's relativly cheap or even a L18 and bits from the wreckers. so you know as well for a cheap brake upgrade, you can use 1600 standard brakes they bolt to the 120Y struts and arew bigger than stock and will pull up the lighter 120Y nicely.

bah forget the stanza or 120y??? struts. if you go to the effort of buying a 180b you might as well use the struts off it, just cut the spring perches off and weld smaller ones on, then surprise surprise you will actually have suspention travel
then you could go for the volvo calipers....but they are the most homosexual calipers ever made...when you have to machine down the hub and can only fit 13 inch mags or 14inch steel rims on a 242 mm disc.....its not worth it, go commo v8 calipers and verada 274mm discs(will fit under 14s), you can then later upgrade straight to VT twin piston calipers and as for diff, use the 120y BW and try and find an auto tailshaft to suit as it might just fit if you use a sss stanza stumpy or a stumpy skyline box

seems like eveyone's doing L series conversions these days. I love it!
I look forward to the day when its strange to lift the bonnet of a 120Y and not see an Lseries in there!

My original l20b na from bluebird into 1200 sedan cost roughly.....
L20b+box/clutch+clutch slave/master+tailshaft etc (bought complete car) $50+$100 car trailer hire New engine mounts x2 $50ish (bad memory) Tailshaft modded to use 1200 diff flange and shortened/balanced $130 Camry radiator new $235 Manifold flange back exhaust 2" $220 Webber 38adm from xf falcon and adapter plate $100 Vl commodore throttle cable $30 Electric fuel pump from forklift from work $0 Add extra $200 for fuel line, steel for fabricating parts, rad hoses, clamps etc etc Comes to TOTAL: $1100 ish This ran a 16.7 at 79mph on a compressionless engine. Got another good engine for $250 from complete smashed car and sold the rest for $100. A $1500 dollar budget is doable if you can do the work. I estimate it took me 100 hrs to do the conversion (was my first one), its the labour that will kill you. Maybe 50-60 rwkw with fresh engine, webber exhaust, mild regrind etc.
