#1 Putting an auto tunnel in....
pager Posted on: 2007/7/14 3:53
Hi, need some opinions.
Just getting my car resprayed again and i want to put an auto tunnel and automatic in my coupe. Will this take away from the value by chopping up the tunnel?

Also where can i get dimension of what the new tunnel needs to be?

Many thanks

i dont think it will effect the dollar value at all, unless of course the tunnel install is a bodgy job that visibly needs repair at the time of sale.

but having an auto tunnel would probably make it more desirable to anyone who wants to do and engine/gearbox conversion with larger than standard parts, and anyone who cant drive manual

im doing my tunnel now...
My advice
go as high as you can
and as wide as you can
without affectimg leg room
1ce its cut it dont look like much room.

I have a queston ANY1

id like to make a removable plate close to firewall so i can access box bolts very easy.
if its legal i will do it as it would be so easy for box to go in and out with good access.

has any 1 done this

the idea of a larger tunnel is so that you can access your bellhousing bolts easily.

i have an auto stanza tunnel welded into my 1200, and have a series 4 rx7 5 speed in it and can remove the gearbox from the car easily within an hour.

like you said go as high and wide as you can practically, then big gearboxes should be a breeze

only prob is engine is close to firewall so i have to go high so i can get my hand and a spanner in.
i thought if i make a removable plate i can sit in car unbolt section of tunnel and use a socket from inside of car.
i dont think ill be able to get socket in from outside as it will be close to tunnel unless i go alot higher.
the sides look ok to get from outside.
its just the starter bolts and top 2 bolts

im going to get a tunnel pressed then weld in but id realy like to make a removable plate for the tricky bolts...
but either way i go i need to make firewall cut big
and i took at back just before old shift opening.

my shifter ends up being like a v8 supercar close to wheel

get a holesaw the same size as the floor plugs and line them up with the top bolts then u can just pull the gromets out when u need to get to the top two bolts

Some ideas can be found here: wiki - manual transmission conversion, see section "Tunnel".
