Late last night, two 1972 Datsun 1200s faced down each other at the 1/4 mile dragstrip. One set a new personal record, the other set a world record. John Wayland's twin-motor White Zombie won by more than 8 seconds over the A12.

Tacho

GreaseMonkey, here is the Friday night report I mentioned to you at your new shop:http://www.nedra.comQuote:
Car and Driver's Ted West's turn....12.3 @ 103 mph second run. Third run 12.3 @ 102 mph. This last run Ted lifted both front tires about 4 inches off the ground immediately, so the front wheels were stationary and not rotating for about 40 feet...a very cool looking power-launch!

Earlier this year, Car and Driver road tested a new 500+ hp V10 Dodge Viper that turned a 12.5 ET, so it's now fairly official from the magazine's perspective, that an electric street sedan runs a quicker 1/4 mile!

That is damn good for electric powered.

What do you guys think.
Is it expensive to build something like this?
Electric powered dragrace car that is.
What about a utility with the tray full of batteries.I think in the long run you will win moneywise because there is no maintenance.

That's good for gasoline power too. I notice in our list, it is faster than the CA18DET-powered 1200s, but not as fast as the SR20DETs.

A couple of years ago, John told me that about $5000 USD could duplicate the upgrade in his other 1200, which is more like a 15-second car. It shifts through a stock 4-speed (using 2,3 and 4 gears). As I understand it, half the money is in the batteries. If you hire out the work, expect the cost to double. So it seems similar in cost to upgrading a piston engine, with similar results. When you're done, recharging is inexpensive, but you may have to replace the batteries every three years or so.

A guy last night told me there is an electric 1200 in Sydney, Australia (i met two unrelated guys from Sydney there).

Yeehaw!! That's right! Drag racing after fossil fuel!

I'm down to build an electric 1200. I just have no clue how to do it right. I'd probably electrocute myself, and that's coming from someone who has built his own megasquirt fuel injection computer, twice..

Someone needs to peel me away from the V8 conversion I'm obsessed with doing.

Awesome news!

I've always wanted an electric car. A 1000 2 door would be the way to go weight wise.

A mate and I have been pondering how hard it would be to DIY it.

We were equally enthused about the news of an electric production car in the USA which is capable of 0-100 in 3 secs.

The prototype is abased on an Ariel Atom and info can be found here: Wrightspeed Inc.
