all-though the a series is a great hard reving engine they take abit of work and money to get some good decent grunt thats why people have turned to almost stock or mildly worked l series in there 1200s as they are not hard to make power from and are pretty tuff stock plus cost l series = cost affective power......and torque torque is low rev power the stuff that gets you off the line quicker

well...umm u need to CUT the engine mount off to weld l series ones on if the tunnel will not massage in excess so that an l series gearbox will fit it will have to be CUT out and weld in a bigger one CUT a hole in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder as l series use a hydraulic clutch thats a bout it

gotta cut a hole in the firewall for the clutch, maybe cut out the radiator support to let air to a bigger radiator

and depending on how you go with the trans tunnel and a sledge hammer, might need to cut out trans tunnel and weld a bigger one in (if you get over hitting your car really hard with a big hammer)

I only had to bash the hell out of the tunnel around where it meets the firewall, and remove the two g/box mounts in the tunnel.

I didnt realise you werent driving yet. Like 1200GXman said, wait till you have your license, even run the a12 with a standard carb until you learn to drive. You can still get yourself into trouble with a stocker, trust me.

i couldnt even bash my test gearbox into my tunnel, i still think the standard bellhousing area of the trans tunnel is to small

maybe i should put an L series in the coupe and see if i can get it in without cutting the tunnel out

I've done 2 L series 1200's, both had manual tunnels. 1 coupe 1 sedan. Only takes a bit of massaging aroung where the firewall meets the tunnel to accomodate the L series boxes as Whitesedan said.

And it doesn't take a sledgehammer to do it. A 2lb club hammer is more than enough.

I've used Stanza and MR30 stumpy boxes in them. The MR30 box is a bit wider and just touched the standard mounts in the tunnel, but the Stanza box fitted between them no problem.

And back on the original question - the standard L16 with twin SUs and a mild cam I first fitted to my 1200 coupe went way harder than the previous worked A14 with lightened flywheel, mitsubishi pistons for hi comp, balanced, ported, cammed, and twin carbed I had in my coupe.

im just saying that it did take a sledge hammer to get mine to fit....well to get it to fit hard against the tunnel any way

i got to the point where a normal sized, but still kinda big hammer couldnt move the tunnel any more
