#11 Re: R31 Diff shortening. What to do with the AXLES???

Thanks heaps, you've been a great help.

Mind if I pick you brain later about the H/Brake set up and tail shaft.

I got a quote from Hardy Spicer for a brand new custom shaft with Heavy duty replaceable uni's for $450 plus gst.

handbrake....yes that thing
never got round to doing it as i didnt have the cable to modify, and now with the r32 brakes i dont think a handbrake will be a feature of my car for some time

and i was really lucky with the tailshaft, i already had one cut down to suit the L series and ute diff, all i had to do was change the end to a BW68 one and redrill 2 holes......a little to easy if you ask me

EDIT, is that tailshaft one with the r31/VN sized unis? if so thats a pretty good price

I got the H/Brake cables with mine so I might just butcher up a setup, cant be too hard.

Yeh, that new tail shaft is with the R31 uni's. Its a pertty standard price for a custom shaft. My mate with a RB30T in a torana with a 9in diff got charged the same price.

I got another question for ya. Is it possible to get a measurement from axle mount flange to axle mount flange of your shortened diff. The dudes cutting my diff are just asking about it.

Cheers again for your help

with discs on

it was.....1317mm im pretty sure
just measure a standard diff with drums still on, then add 20mm
or just 135mm shorter than r31

might be taking the rear wheels off tonight so ill measure it if i do

Hay pigdog, did you end up measuring your axle. If not, its cool. I will do like you said and just subtract 135mm off the over all length of my axle housing

just out of interest, and stealing a thread, any one interested in an r31 diff housing cut down to be 20mm wider than standard?
has all mounts to suit a sedan

didnt get around to measuring it, might do that tonight

I might have been interested a week ago LOL.

Is this a spare you are getting rid of or you upgrading to something different?

Thanks in advanve for that measurement.

i was trying wheels on last night, and round out that rims that show off the brakes alot more seem to sit out to far.....so might shorten another one for my car if the brakes will clear the body and all
so its the housing thats in my car atm
but i'll keep the axles and centre and what not as i'll be able to get 10mm off each axle for nothing, handy having a lathe

These new wheels you are talking about, they obviously have a different off set to the TRX mags. Do your TRX mags fit ok on that shortened diff, cause they are the mags I am running on my 1200 ute.

If I had brakes like yours then I would DEFFINATLY want to show em off

If you dont mind saying, how much your your rotors cause I ran the verniers over mine and they are just about FUC*ED. Do they fit under Std R31 calipers as well??
