driving home this morning from a swap meet, gave the ute a boot full, after i backed of, it started coughing and carrying on. i pulled over, popped bonnet, gave it a rev, reved fine, jumped back in, drove for about 10 mins, nothing then again did it. pulled up, same thing reved it when i stopped then went again another 5 mins runnin fine, then it did it again, as i was going up a small hill, just made it up, in second gear, but the odometer was showing it was reving up at like 5 grand, but just like garggling and carrying on, there 45 twin carbies, heres some factors taht may have contributed. i had filled up about 30 mins b4, i noticed on my extractors theres a small crack, and the pressure guage for the carbies, is filling up with fuel 4 sum reason and has stopped working, and the fuel is slowly leaking out. I am going 2 replace the guage 2morrow, but is there anything else i shud be looking 4???,it sounds like either 2 much fuel or 2 lil fuel maybe. is there anything i shud check 2 give you guys more of an idea. wats an ididcation that the valves etc need re doing? cheers

fix the fue issue first, i did as i had 2 rimps in the metal line, cut them out and replacedwith hose, more flow was a lot better.
Might also be a bad batch of fuel but more likely an issue under load like mine.

yea fingers crossed its this guage leaking or just a bad load of fuel, i went over all the linkages and spotted nothing out of the ordinary. the guage is between the carbies, so the first would get fuel but the second wouldnt be getting as much

Save yourself a lot of diagnostic grief & replace the fuel filter first up.
If you got a gutfull of crook fuel, then there is a good chance that the filter is partially blocked. If this is correct, then the filter will pass enough fuel to allow the engine to idle & run at low throttle settings, & while it's doing that, the fuel bowls fill up. Next, you come to a hill & feed it some throttle, ... the engine consumes more fuel than the filter will pass, ... you experience problems linked to running out of fuel in the carbs, so you close the throttle & roll to the side of the road. When the throttle is closed the flow now excedes demand, the carbs fill up again, engine revs like normal & off you go again. [repeat this sequence if you want untill you get home] While you're out at Supercreep, buy a second filter & keep it in the glovebox, or wherever. You never know when you might need it. Even if that's not the problem, you're only out of pocket a few Sheckles & blocked filters are the No. 1 reason for problems like you are describing, particularly since you got fuel only a short time before. Don't curse the filter, thank it because it's kept all that crud out of the carbs. [we hope]

ok theproblem has not been resolved as i found out 2 day. sat on side of road for an hour an half broken down. ok i replaced the filter and it went like a charm, now 2 day on way home, cut right out. pull over manage 2 get it just idling, noticed piss all fuel is going into the filter. sit and think 4 a bit. look 4 screw driver. call nrma, and get a tow truck coming, keep turning key, only tiny fuel makes it into filter. decide to take the top of the fuel pump, the four screws and the middle one. take the seal of and have a look. and the fuel lines to the pump. wack it all back 2gether. then turn the key in anger for 5 mins, then suddenly it starts back up, runs like #### 4 a bit, backfiring etc. then clears up, and i manage 2 drive it home. now me and tyrie think that the fuel pump is fine. could it just be my lines are blocking up with crap, fingers crossed. wats the best way to clear the lines and drain the fuel and clean the tank, and are we right by ruling out the pump, cheers guys, thanks 4 the help

I got a this datsun2400 from some guy a few months back. on the drive home after getting it it kept running out of fuel like every 2k's and i would have to sit for about 5min and then off i would go for another 2k's, now the problem was just the fuel filter. so i changed and filter and it still did the same thing. went through about 4 filters.. wat the problem was is that those simple cheap inline filters block really easy with lots of big particals and when u switch the engine off to change the filter or watever those particals syphoon back into the lines and tank then get suck into the new filter straight away and block it. easy fix after running the engine for awhile switch it off, straight away pull the fuel line off at the tank fitting then pull the line of the carby and blow all that fuel out in reverse. dont even need to change the filter do this about 2-3 time and your good as gold. Ive been told that the ####ty 10% of enthanol they have in some fuels these days is not good for old cars as it breaks loose all the rust in the tank. anyways i think thats the problem ur having(had me confuse for awhile) give it a try.
edit: before blowing out those lines in reverse like i said, i had prevesly change the filter, new pump and replaced all the rubber fuel lines and blew the steel line out with air however this did not fix it..... i didnt drain the tank as it was full and the drain plug is seized. but this is probley wat i needed to do.

ok, thanks 4 that i will give it a go asap, so do you think its worth replacing the fuel pump still but. or just try this. i have drained all the fuel from it via the drain plug, but there didnt appear to be much rubbish coming out???. also the line out of the petrol tank, where is that located, and is there some form of filter on that part 2. a mate told me to check it.
