low k's 1999+ Magna.
My brother has a AWD one before the ugly headlights version. It's a fantastic car, and purchased for $11,000 with 55,000kms. Spend the remaining $9000 on mortgage or holidays. It is a total waste of money to buy a new car in the oversupplied second hand car market we have at the moment..

8k plus a 500 dollar car gives you 20c per 100klms, no engine rebuilds, no oil drips or servicing except tyres / brakes once in a blue moon and 1.5k in batteries every 6 years.

I would find the 70km range a bit limiting. Wonder what the re-sale value would be like? Don't buy somthing with a classy interior or highly sort after because every mark or km you put on it drops the re-sale value. Have you thought of a toyota prado? they can be had quite cheep for what they are.

80 % of aussies drive only 40-50klms per day but its just a thought as most cars on our roads with current technology will be an issue when petrol hits 2 dollars a litre and more.
We have to evolve. With A123 batteries at double the price you would get 250klms with that car. Although the Tesla and some others are truly expensive as they are only the first of their kind this decade, with mass numbers they will be the way to go very soon. http://www.teslamotors.com/ I like the hot rod version of this one http://www.phoenixmotorcars.com/

spend 10K on a 2nd hand Subaru Liberty, Camry, Falcon or Commodore, invest the other 10K.
Personally we have an old 2.5K diesel Pajero as a family car, so I would be investing 17.5K, but I understand many peoples egos warp their value judgements to such a degree that they couldnt possibly drive a car they perceived as "old" or "cheap".

camry or maxima forester since when is a forester fwd perthute... i have one and its awd.... some early libertys were fwd but since about 1997 98 all subys in aus have been awd pretty much. Nothing wrong with magnas from about 2000+ either, except that the rear 3 plugs are platinum and front 3 are normal?? always questioned that one as you could make all of them platbnium for service sake. you have to remove intake manifold to get to the rear 3. I reckon max $15 on the car and sve the rest for rainy day if its your $$4 or leave it in your mortage redraw if not. D electric cars are not near robust or user friendly yet to consider as a daily family transport yet. And toyota/honda dont tell their prius and hybrid buyers that you have to replace the batteries in 6 years at a cost of $6grand a pop.... false environmetal economy there as making and diposing of those batteries is about as harmful as all the petrol you may have used.
