boofhead Posted on: 2007/12/1 10:02
hi, i'm at an absolute loss !! i've got an Acer laptop and recently one of the hinges seized up and broke the cast alloy mounting flange that attached to the chassis.
in my quest to find out what i can do i've been told a couple thngs -
1 ... i need to replace the whole screen (which is crap, cos i've managed to get the hinge out)
2 ... "you need to be an Acer dealer to get parts ... but even tho we are, you cant buy the hinges" .... WTF ??!!!!!!!!!
3 ... "ahhh ... your laptops 3 years old ??!!! you should just replace it ... here, this ones $1900 and is nearly the equivalent to what you've got" ....

now i've found hinges on the internet here and there but cant actually find ones that suit my laptop .... so hear lies my problem

i'm really hoping someone could possibly help point me in the right direction ........

much much muuuuuuccchhhhhh appreciated if you can.

cheers in advance

All laptops are like hyundai excels, meant to be driven for 3 years then replaced. At $900 for a pretty good laptop, it's not worth anyones time to setup a business. Don't buy an acer laptop in future, and before you buy a new one, ask the sales guy if you can buy the hinges. My dell laptop had a similar problem. They couldn't replace the hinge either.

If you get the hinge out, someone with a mill could make you another one. Post a photo, and someone might agree to make one.

my sister had a same problem with her dell laptop, one hinge for the screen broke when some d*ckhead security guard 'accidently' dropped her laptop whilst going thru security at the airport.

In short it was going to be wayyy to much time/money/effort to get it replaced + no way to pin it on the bloke. But i'd look around at 2nd hand computer stores to see if theres an equivalent or the same model you could nick parts off...

Or just buy a mac book, wont need to replace it for a decade
