my 1200 is currently painting in enamel but due to an unfortunent bump with another car it needs to be repainted. im not going back to bare metal on the whole car just in places, such as a rust repair missed on the first resto and badges have been removed.

i under stand that these places will need to be etch primed again. but my main question is

can you paint 2pac over enamel or does the car have to go back to bare metal?????

any help with this would be greatly appriciated.

james

Personally I'd take it back to bare metal if you want the paint job to both last and stand out. Strip the car, have it media blasted, do whatever rust repairs need to be done, lay down a quality 2pak etch and go from there.

That being said, are you doing the painting yourself? I understand you may want to avoid going back to bare metal to save money if a shop is doing it, but no panelbeater I know of will place a warranty on a paint job that they haven't gone back to bare metal for.

2 pac over enamel can be done. But you will need to sand back well and apply a good primer over the top. If you dont sand it well the primer wont stick. For example: if later you mask something the masking tape may pull the new top coat off.

I only went bare metal on my roof and front guards with my 1200 coupe and the end result was pretty good. It was professionally painted however.

On in true tight arse Datsun style you could paint the car in Brightside with a roller and get just about as good a job for the cost of $150 or so,

Doing this kind of job yourself in the back yard hits you in a different way. Going back to bare metal won't cost you any more (if you use paint stripper and elbow grease) but the extra time needed may kill you.

Points to Mildman too. For that extra professional look grab a spray can of clear to go over it, give it that nice glossy finish.

thanks for the help guys. the car was resprayed about 4 year ago and was taken back to bare metal. the front end will be taken back to bare metal as they are all new panels, the only reason im respraying the whole car again is i have taken a few smal dents out and removing badges, plus the hole thing was due for a freshen up.

i was planning to under coat and to inside all the door jams edges of panel etc, and then pay some one to top coat the rest of the car.

thanks for the help again.
