Those are signs that it is time to rinse out the fuel bowl of the carburetor. It might be some other problem, but its worth doing now and it might solve it.

A simple way is just remove the jets from the outside, rinse in petrol or ether and put back in. It has fixed three of ours 1200s this past year.

Had what sounds like the same problem with my ute just yesterday.

I was sure it was a bad load of fuel or a blocked filter or something, but ended up being a faulty fuel flow regulator.

Took that off and replaced with a hose for now and it runs great.

But as you say it could be many things but probably fuel related.

ok result....put 20litters of fuel in the ute and a bottle of metho...then ran ok for bout 40ks then pulled up and stalled so i tryed to start it and it refused to then adventually went but ran shocking!!! farting and backfireing loud as hell..(also carby was making wierd noise) then let one big bang out and went ok again...i need a list of possible causes for the machanic to look at so what could it be???....i also thought it cant be the carby as it only happens every now and then

This past fall my 1200 did all those things (randomly). It sounds like you are describing my trial. The cause was crud in the bottom of the carburetor, and the fix was two nuts on the outside of the carb. Didn't need to take it apart. Just drain the fuel bowl, rinse the jets and put the two nuts back on.
