The compressions were two at 180 and two at 160. I've had the jets out of the carbs and they aren't blocked. Plugs are the right colour. Timing chain is a little worn, but within limits. There is an odd squeakey noise - a bit like pinking, or that whistling sound VWs make, which is there no matter where we set the timing.
