off the top of my head i'm not sure exactly what they are.
If you have a S13 w/s manual then look up the diagram of the engine system and you should be able to figure out what these parts are. S13 manuals can be found online for free if you use google. i had links to one on my old computer but not on this one, sorry. Anyway, in my opinion i would try and keep them on the engine. Nissan put them there for a reason, and if that reason was for emissions control then come engineer cert. time you will probably benefit from having them on there. Cheers

The carbon canister (the big one) is part of the fuel tank vent system, plugging the line that feeds it would build pressure in the fuel tank, which isn't good.
that other bit looks like the regulator that feeds the fumes back to the engine to be burnt. That part of the emissions system doesn't affect performance noticeably, you'll want to leave em.

there so ulgy and i am scraching my head to find a spot to put em ? i dont care about engineers .
i have had a look at pics of peoples ca18dets ute and noone seems to have em ??? is there some one with a ca18det that could tell me wat they did ??????????? thanks

big one is carbon canister ...it's a good idea for keeping fuel fumes out of the cabin.
The small one is the 'power valve' vaccuum reservoir. The vaccuum in this canister is 'saved up' while you are not on boost, and is used to reclose the secondary butterflies when engine RPMs drop below 4000rpm. The associated vaccuum soleniod is controlled by the ECU, and it 'unleashes the vaccuum' to pull the secondary butterflies closed after coming back down from above 4000rpm. The natural position of the secondary butterflies in the intake tract are 'normally open'. So you choose not to connect them. But expect a 10-20% torque loss below 4000rpms. I have all the power valve stuff under my dash, and it sounds like an iron lung ![]()

Take Dattodudes advice he is spot on
As to the benefits of the powervalve setup, well the intake manifold has the buterflies in it ready to go and its not hard to hook up. (Thanks to Dattodude when he helped me with this) The problem I found is that this powervalve setup is not on the circuit as most are for the euro model 180sx. If you are using the standard ecu it is only 2 wires. I could tell you more if I get my notes from the workshop tomorrow.

thanks jarrod im just haveing a hard time coz every pic thats of a ca18det in a datto i can't see the 'power valve' vaccuum reservoir thingy .

When was the last time you saw a manufacturer spend thousands on something that's not worth bothering about? Except for maybe Kia...
A lot of money and effort was involved in designing and implementing the secondary butterflies. You're not going to set them up properly because a bunch of internet goons also couldn't be bothered? Or think the bits look ugly? You can always hook them up later, but we saw differences on the dyno when I was tuning my engine, which also involved changing the revs at which they opened and closed, which is adjustable with the autronic. I'm firmly of the opinion that they should be hooked up. You can view topic.
