Yeah yeah, my quote was 4 years ago and yes it was a recondition, geez sorry I didnt get all technical.

I was just sharing what I found on the net just for interests sake, not like I was trying to proof any specific technical point.

I know how much a full rebuild and some fancy stuff done to a motor costs, I had a mild a12 done and it cost me $2500. All I'm saying is that thats a high price to pay for a near standard a12 when you can easily get a second hand one in good nick for under $100.

That's a nice little cop out but you used the tern "rip off" meaning that in your opinion, the seller was attempting to steal money [presumably by fraudulent means] & you also said that [in your view] he was on drugs, & that's more than just a casual comment.

You weren't "just sharing what you found on the net" you were slinging off at someone that you know nothing about, who has done you no harm whatsoever, & all over a subject that you also seem to know very little about, so don't bullshit to us.

I think that you were being grossly unfair to the seller who has a whole engine on offer that [allegedly] is, in effect, a brand new complete unit when your only comparison was a cheap & nasty [& unqualified] 4 years old 'rebuild' estimate/quote, whatever the hell a 'rebuild' actually is, & now you admit that you paid $2,500 for a 'mild' A12.
In my book 'mild' means almost stock, so this price would serve as a much better comparison & the eBay one shapes up pretty well by comparison wouldn't you say?

Even the quote of $1200 for an A12 engine could stand a look at as I suspect that this could easily be for a short block without a cylinder head, but I could stand corrected.

Geting all technical?
Is that what you call comparing like-for-like? Well, now you understand that when putting 5h1t on someone like this, perhaps it's a good idea to get 'technical'

Rant now ended.

The $1200 was for the following,

Our old engines are sourced from Australia and overseas where the same vehicles are in use. Every engine is completely stripped and chemically cleaned. All old pistons, rings, bearings, valves etc. are scrapped. Every block is bored and honed. Every crankshaft is reground on all journals. Every camshaft is reprofiled and every cylinder head completely machined.

Every HM/Gem is fitted with a huge list of new engine parts as shown below. However, only the best quality parts are used to ensure a long life for all our engines. These parts are produced by the same manufacturers who supply the original manufacturers.

Pistons
Ring
Main Big End Bearings
Cam Bearings
Timing Chain or Gears
Tensioners and Guides
Inlet & Exhaust Valves
Welsh Plugs
Oil Pump Valves
Oil Pump Springs
Seals
Gaskets
Gallery Plugs

This is all getting a bit exciting is'nt it!
Never fear the guy on ebay has probably coped more positive feedback for his engine as a result of this post than would have otherwise been the case.

Good luck to him i say.

But whilst on HM GEM engines,i recently picked up a second hand one in a wreck(A14) which was duly pulled down(as you do)with a view to a fresh set of rings, balance, scalpel to the flywheel etc.
Now as it turns out it's 1mm oversize BARGAIN i say! So off to a friend, one of the coasts most highly sought specialty engine machine shops/builders for some detailing........48 hours later, friend rings me,hey Rob you know this A14 has 3 matching con rods and one that is a ring in,which means i can't balance the rods cause its heaps lighter, has not been touched by anyone before and will cost a bomb to machine the other 3 down to match, what should i do?

I supplied him a matched set of four replacements.

Moral of the story..Trust no one,not even the big companys, and expect the un expected more often than not.

2k is cheap compared to a ford transit engine in second hand condition. Try 6-8k for one.
If you want cheaper do it yourself and then youll see its still not cheap.
At least there are people who support our community with various options.

if you want a quality perf engine go to a shop and get a quote
if you want a production shop replacement $1200 is a good deal
a lot of customers are motivated purely by price this is HM's market they try to keep the price down to keep volume up .
this is production
at our shop $1200 gets you about 12 hours work
we have more work than we can do because its high quality
$650 for a good rering is not so bad a deal
dazza

Yeah, HM Gem are high turnover and keep tonnes of parts in stock, so their end-to-end process is way more cost effective than a local engine shop.

That being said, $1200 is still a quote. From what I understand depending on the condition of the major components (head, block) they can charge over their list price.

yes a quote is a rough price that shops give with out knowing the condition of the rest of the motor untill its pulled down. if u r lucky then the final price mayb close 2 the quoted price but in most cases and with older engines its not. my m8 just got a full forged rebuild in his gtir pulsar by apc in QLD. was quoted around the 7g mark 4 a fully rebuilt bullet proof bottom end n final price after evrything was done was nealy 13g as even though the motor seemed fine b4 it was pulled down some of the parts were worn or broken and needed machining or replacing. if u have a efi engine alot of $ can b spent on the dyno doing fuel maps n stuff.machining takes alot of time $ coz u dont know what has n what dosnt need machining untill its pulled down. although my m8 was a bit pissed at the final price his car F&$KING MOVES. if u want the best u gotta pay top $$ and also how longs a piece of string???
thats my 2 cents anyway
