Robert..
A quote is a fixed price, an ESTIMATE is an approximation as you have described.

Yeah I did use the term rip off, and yeah it is my opinion. So what? I'm aloud an opinion, if you don't like it fine. Did you get out of the wrong side of bed? He was on drugs is a casual comment, not like I actually went and saw the bloke and witnessed him shooting up. Sorry to of offended the high and mighty knowledge base you seem to think you are. Anyway I don't really care, if you want to get up and arms about it, go ahead. Since you know everything and can some how telepathicly know that the rebuild I got was cheap nasty and unqualified, you should know that "mild rebuild" doesnt have any specific meaning and might or might not be near stock. Oh, sorry, thats in your special book.

If I got a quote for $1200 and ended up paying $1700 I'd be mighty upset. We need to keep reminding these shops that they need to deliver what they promise. If I wanted an estimate, I'd ask for an "estimate", not a quote.

Here in USA, by law they cannot go 10% over estimate without customer's permission. And yet its not uncommon for them to do it anyways...

This is really turning into a no brainer.

Check out the Oxford Dictionary if unsure the differance between"estimate"and "quotation"

The dictionary meaning for quote in an economical sense is 'to state the current price for'. This means the most accurate price for the work given all of the known circumstances at the time. As we all know these can change.

In terms of a quote being legally binding, this is only the case if both parties sign off on it. If you signed off on an estimate then the same rules would apply. Think of large scale Govt projects. The tendering process gathers 'quotes' and 'estimates' and awards work to the bid which best suits their needs. Now how many Govt contracts go over budget without any form of penalty fees or legal implications? A whole heap!

Therefore, from my summation, the only difference between a quote and an estimate is 'bugger all'. I'll welcome any debate

My 2 cents(everyone else has had a go)
I think what he is asking is probably justifiable in his own mind as well as in others, however, I very seriously doubt that anyone will pay that sort of money for an a12 that they haven't comissioned the build for themselves.
Have a look what second hand a15 with webers and all the other fruit are fetching... stuff all compared to what the cost to build one is.
I cant sell an a12 i have for 100 dollars despite the fact its a pretty fresh motor.

I could see someone paying good money to rebuild an original motor from an original car, but most datsuns, and i say most, not all, aren't worth much more than he is asking for the motor.

Well I never intended to start an argument, Dodgeman made his point, I made mine, whatever. I'll just leave it at that.
