#1 Gearbox weights. i got em
cheater_5 Posted on: 2008/2/17 5:02
Just took some weights of some of the gearboxes i have in the garage.
Heres what i got.

56 4 speed (b110 edition)with fork - 17.8kg
60a 5 speed (kpb310 edition) with fork - 24.8kg
63a 5 speed with clutch assembly - 31kg
CA18DET 5 speed (rwd edition) with fork - 43.5kg
T50 JDM AE86 with clutch fork - 31.6kg

I did the 60a first and was yea this is a light as i remember. Then the 56 and it felt like a feather, like i could pick it up with one hand if i pleased. Then the ca box, have to bend with my knees and i dang is it heavy as fark.
There are some figures for you.
Any question why 1200's go so well... didnt think so

very nice. remember to "Always add lightness" whenever possible. Although the 60A 5-speed can increase fuel economy, it won't make a 1200 accelerate faster.

I have a 63A so I'll weigh it and post up the result. Anyone ever weighed a T50?

This was the secret to the 1000 & 1200's performance.

While we might grizzle about the light & weak nature of the drivelines we must remember that these components were designed to be as light as possible while still retaining enough strength to give long & reliable service with the stock & original engines in these cars.
That the clever Datsun engineers succeeded so well is reflected in the surprisingly large number of survivors all these years down the track.

Just remember that our Datsuns were NEVER known for unreliable mechanicals, yet these so called 'flimsy' components still live on allowing great performance in a car designed from the outset for 'economy'

I just put the 63a gearbox complete with clutch set up (with no gearbox mount) on the scales, 31kg.

The t50 with bellhousing and clutch set up 36.5kg.
