I think turbo's (If being rebuilt properly) should be done in a specialist workshop or at least with the right equipment.
They spin the turbine up to rediculus speeds etc.

Here are some of the things that have been done to my reco turbo...

VSR shaft balance
UV fracture assessment
Acid treatment
Corrosion treatment
Actuator preassure test and service

Keep in mind - the last thing you want is for it fly apart and go through your engine / cooler. Then you'll be up for a new turbo AND a new engine etc.

But everyone knows we'd still be in the stone age unless people 'had a crack' and gave it a go!

i knew people would say that instead of what the guy asked

the only thing that cant be done on your list is the
balancing
and im sure he can get that done at that stage

everything else you listed can be done in ya backyard

so does any1 have or know of instructions like he originaly asked???

id like to see whats involved as the amount of parts and cost just dont add up to me i always thought its overpriced considering you can buy a cheap BRAND NEW turbo for $200 CHINA CRAP
garrett new is $1000+
and a rebuild cost around$500
a rebuild kit for garrett cost $35 usa

so $450+ labour always seemed steep to me

I know Matto1kute asked "is there a book/manual on how to rebuild garrett turbos?"
and the answer is I don't know, sorry.

But he did also ask...
can turbo's be rebuilt at home?

I started my post with 'I think' (in other words - in my opinion)
I also said that 'here is a list of things done to mine'... I didn't say that he couldn't do it.

however, I do agree that the reco price is pretty steep... maybe there's more to it? I don't know, I've never seen the process.

if your not changing wheels you could probably skip the balance
usually your just doing seals, bush and thrust
intercooler will catch any chunks if you F up

450 in labour? at 100/hour sounds like a fair thing
you get a warranty too and support and advice dont begrudge what proffesionals charge for a proffesional job. it took them years to learn how to get it right

i want to have a go at mine one day but if it fails it will be on my own head
