A14 carb, A14 electronic distributor.

Lack of back pressure is a possible cause. Car is at the shop getting an exhaust right now so if that helps I will post about it.

I did not use a new gasket when I fit the new carb - given the nature of that thick gasket I always thought they were reusable?

Yes, the factory gaskets are reusable, and require no sealant. Ditto for most aftermarket carburetor 'kit' gaskets. You will have idle problems if it is leaking (won't idle down to 600 rpm).

Ya I've got a 1200. Had to come to this site to see what a Datsun 110 cp looked like, sad I know.
I was fighting with a simler issue a while back.
Traced it down to a vac leak and a Ign part that wasn't grounded.
I had TUNED out the vac leak when I first got the car, thought it was just bad gas ( sat for over 6yrs) I only moved it around the driveway, so didn't worry about it.
Still has a bit of a flat spot at 2-3k rpm, otherwise it runs fine.
i planed to pull the motor for something with a few more cc's, so the stocker was of no consern. Drive it every so I've learned how to tune it.

you know there's a blue coupe I'd see running up & down Evergreen Way every so often. i spent almost all of last year remodeling a couple of commercial buildings on Evergreen way, I assume thats not you.

First on topic: With the engine running spray some carb cleaner around the base of the carb and check for a vacuum leak. Next check for the distributor to see if it's horrible worn and that everything is grounded. Carb and ignition problems give the same symptoms. To me it almost sounds like distributor bounce but it also has the symptoms of a vacuum leak.

Now off topic: NSR500 as a long time owner of over pumped RD's and having road raced Honda 125 GP bikes it's really hard to beat the joy of a screaming 2 stroke..............the 1200 is fun in the ride the Poo out of an old CR80 way but never going to be the "oh my God this thing is gonna kill me of TZ/RD/RS/ NSR or ported CR500 thrill"

As you can see, I know the feeling of a nasty two stroke!
The bike I've put together IS a NSR500; 1993 NSR250 with a 1985 RG500 motor, I did all the work save the final welding, paint on the tail.

They say this bike CAN'T be built, that's stright from the pro's in thailand! Some guy did a photo shoot on it when it was in Vegas a few yrs back, Japan only Mag, I could never find it.

heres my 2 stroke, 75 H1, needs a clutch cable & an oil leak resolved & a final carb jetting otherwise runs good! (besidesd a hideous 20 year old color scheme I chose back then )

It's all just piles of parts.
I've never been able to leave anything alone.
My 86 GS700 now has a 85 GS1150, it's a rat bike from hell.
Same with the Datsun, it will some day be just more parts all rollin down the street at the same time hehehe.

i was having this problem recently with a different carb i put on (second hand still)

after i recently filled up the problem went away...

just a tank of dodgy petrol
