It's not the importing that will be the problem, but the registration. The ZA built 1200 GX's look to have the original 1200 engine [front distributor] at least up to 1975 & possibly untill the end of production in 1976 or '77, however the whole induction system looks to be the square top Hitachi's imported directly from Japan in the post 1973 models.

If this is true, then this is the emissions compliant induction system & would be just fine in NSW. At the very worst the car would need to comply with the same rules as the 1975 Datsun 120Y & I dont recall seeing any carbon canisters on them as this was an ADR-27A feature which didn't come into force untill somewhere aound 1978 or later.

The Aussie Datsun models built after 1973 seem to have had the idle cutoff solenoid built into the single downdraught carbs & this prevents not only 'running on' but it also prevents unburned hydrocarbons [fuel] from being pushed into the exhaust in the few revs that the engine turns over after ignition switch off. I doubt that there would be more than one or two inspectors in all of the whole country that would be aware of that function & the chances of being knocked back for that are rated somewhere between slim to none.
Yes, there was an anti dieseling device for the twin carbs, but it worked in a completely different way to the single carb ones.

As for other requirements, you would probably need a dual circuit brake system, but if yours is a single circuit, which I doubt, then every mid 1972 or later Aussie spec 1200 in the country had this so finding donor plumbing & hardware would not be a problem.

Aussie spec cars had a collapsible steering column & this would be a requirement too if they were trying to screw you, but again, all Aussie spec cars & utes had this so I doubt that it's a problem finding a donor if absolutely necessary.

Seat belts are probably required for all four seating positions & these are readily available if necessary.
The body should have the requisite mountings built in.

If some clever bastard is really getting picky, then the latchable glove box lid would be the go & these were used in Aust from 1972.

Anything else? Ahhhh, not that I can think of right now & I suspect that your car will very likely pass through the system completely unscathed as-is unless you need seat belts & dual circuit brakes.

Welcome to Australia.

P.S. Australia is a big country & if you plan on living outside one of the major cities then see if you can get the whole five speed & driveshaft assembly from a Bakkie or whatever as the overdrive will come in very handy on the long hauls.

The most you will need is a PCV and a crankcase breather to the airbox. No serious regulations were introduced until mid 1975.

The details of all of the ADR's can be found on the DOTARS website, because they are superseeded by the third editions we can view/download them for free.

26, 27, 27a, 27b & 27c are all Emission Controls

The compliance plate from my March 1976 ute has

1-Reversing Signal Lamps
2-Door Latches And Hinges
3-Seat Anchorages For Motor Vehicles
4c-Seat Belts
5b-Seat Belt Anchorages
6-Direction Turn Signal Lamps
7-Hydraulic Brake Hoses
8-Safety Glass
10b-Steering Columns
11-Internal Sun Visors
12-Glare Reduction In Field Of View
14-Rear Vision Mirrors
15-Demisting Of Windscreens
16-Windscreen Wipers And Washers
18-Location And Visibility Of Instruments
20-Safety Rims
21-Instrument Panels
22a-Head Restraints
25-Anti-Theft Locks
28-Motor Vehicle Noise

So, unless they forgot to put a number on my plate it didnt have to comply with any emissions controls only Motor Vehicle Noise (28). Also the first vehicle emission ADR was released on 1 Jan 1972, so again I'm sure that you wont have to worry about emissions.

I will put all this up in the wiki under ADR's when I get a chance as I'm going threw all this with my ute and it has a heap more numbers including 27c (DAM IT)...

EDIT: interestingly my 1985 ute doesnt need reversing lights... lol

This is that list for July 1985 ute: 2-3-4c-5b-6-7-8-10b-11-12-14-15-16-18a-20-21-22a-24-25a-27c-28a-35a

this is off topic but im intrested. the majority of 1000's where before the adr's came into affect (1969) so does this mean that the 1000 does not have to comply with most of the adrs unless it is modified and has a later engine in it like say an a14?

A large majority of Datto lovers are that way, because of the pre-pollution ADR status of most of the cars pre 1973.

Modifications have always been easier to get engineered and registered on pre-1973 cars.

I have spoken to many people (including RTA Approved engineers) and I believe that its a case of the year model of the car OR the engine, which ever is newer. If you had a CA or SR or whatever else, the engine needs to meet the emissions controls of the year of the engine and what car it came out of, however the car body needs to comply with its reliant safety standards.

correct mitch photog, needs to meet year of ewngine if swapping engine, also changes in induction type from na to tubs/supercharger etc need engenieering in vic.

as for reverse lights on 1200 ute in 1985, i think you will find comercial vehicles have different regulations.

As the gx for SA should still have been bult and made in Japan, it would probably meet most of the requirements anyway.

Bring it in, and a 5 speed and tail shaft for me please.
