yet again another #### fight about our beloved datsuns
ill add in to if you want a mild streeter on injection and dont care about originality go for the cheaper, better and easier option whatever that is if you want original parts go for factory efi if you want a performance motor that'll leave your passenger needing there undies washed go for the full custom manifolds etc build the car to how you want it if people dont like it thats there problem not yours

I'm not one to judge what one bloke wants and the other needs. Each to their own. Personally I love old school rare intakes. I have owned 2 offenhauser intake manifolds for the L series. I have an Offenhauser 4 barrell manifold and a 390cfm holley that I am going to put in place of a single 45dcoe weber and it will probably run worse. But it's what I want!

I just like datsun parts. Lots of them.

The factory EFI manifold is a big compromise.
If you are looking for the best street drivability and economy the manifold is to short by at least 8". If you are looking for best power it is still a litle short and would be much better with individual throttle plate per runner, and propper belmouths. I believe that factory engineers are very constrained by building a neat package that easily fits in the available space and to fit in with buget constraints rather than building the best manifold for all round performance..

I believe that you are absolutely right, in almost all of your observations. That those factory engineers did so well, not just with the induction, but with the whole line of 'B' series cars is a never ending source of wonderment to me. For street use, all-round performance is where it's at & I personally think that they came up with the best available compromise, but for total performance, unblown, the factory EFI manifold sucks.

Didnt a factory EFI manifold sell on Ebay a while back for $1300? I had one that I was going to use with a turbo, it would have been perfect for that application.

On a low boost application I have no doubt that a standard EFI manifold would perform much better that a 23/36 weber but it lacks the volumetric space required between the throttle body and the port face to be effective over say 7psi. As many have said before and will say again, LPG, Large custom intake runners with a slight graduation upwards, Blow through Gas Research. Much power and reliability.

Although the factory EFI manifold affords an easy shortcut to blowthrough forced induction, they are and always will be a low performance antique. (I don't think anyone disputes that) If they were cheap and plentiful, (don't we all wish) I'm sure that there would be countless threads of people whining about their limitations. I will conceed they can be a nice touch on the right car, but to what end, if the car would run harder with a carburator(s)?
You also have to think about the application here. Our friend has a very tidy moggy minor. I doubt whether an unsightly factory injection manifold is going to enhance the appearance of his pristine engine bay. IMO he'd be considerably better off to have a scratch built manifold made, and use that. He's after more go, without a backward step in reliability. I don't know about there in Aussie, but you could easily make a manifold cheaper than what you'd pay for a factory one here. Plus with a bit of a buff up, it wouldn't look out of place.
