and they are black already

Could be running too rich? Very dirty aircleaner maybe? Choke stuck on? Idle mixture too rich? Incorrectly jetted carb/s (if non standard)...

did the idle mix, air cleaners clean, the choke knob in the cabin has never gone right to the dash its sticks out bout an inch but it idles at 700 revs, standard carb.

With aircleaner lid off and choke cable in as far as can go is choke plate open?

Did you gap the new plugs correctly before putting in?

Incorrect gap will not cause black plugs, but excessively rich mixture will. This could be compounded by the wrong heat range plugs.

The book says NGK BP5ES from memory & in normal use these are perfect. I used one stage colder BP6ES in my old B10 sedans 1200 GX engine as most of my driving was done at highway speeds out here in the sticks & this proved to be just fine.

My money says that you should pop the air cleaner assembly off the carb & you need to hold the workshop book in one hand & return ALL carb adjustments back to standard with the other. Check the float level in the little window as part of this exercise
Once done, give the engine a full & proper tune up & it will reward you for your efforts with great economy, smooth running & willing performance. Go for it.

it also could be burning oil.

Are the plugs dry & sooty or wet & oily? Dry & sooty would indicate a rich mixture while wet & oily would mean an oil control problem.

My plugs would get wet & oily and even crusty every couple of weeks. I finally had the time to tear it apart and discovered I had broken two valve guides in half.

didnt say that itd cause them to go black, was mearing checking for optimum running
