Wow I like those aero front ends! I will have to come up with something to vastly improve aerodynamics on the next attempt.

I will probably put the twin carb 1608 back into my B210 and start all over from scratch with an '81 2-door B310 sedan that I have. That's the car I will be continuing my developement with for next year's record attempt. I don't mind modifying that one for this type of thing. I will be shooting for 70 mpg. Hopefully I can find an A12 or A13 over the winter as well.

Impressive result for an A14. Can you recap on what you did to the engine and car? eg. tyres, tyre pressures, aero, engine compression ratio, describe the test road (flat, windy etc), etc. Did you use a vacuum gauge to gauge engine load? etc

Must make for some interesting flavour for next cake!

Thanks Fandastick,

Sure, the tires used were 175/70R13's inflated to 50 psi all around. Oil used was regular 5W-30, run 1 quart low on purpose. I don't know the actual compression ratio. I am guessing about 10.5 to 1. I did not use a vacuum gauge. I drove between 42 and 50 mph in 5th gear as much as possible. The minimal areo mods were listed 6 posts ago with a picture. The course was full of hills and valleys. Here is a graph that one of the participants graphed with his GPS.

Remember that the B310 is the largest & heaviest of the four 'B' bodied models, so you're pushing a headwind & dragging a load right from the start.

To be honest, if you want to get serious, & I mean really serious, then see if you can find one of those Canadian B10 [1000] two door sedans. There's a huge weight saving straight up & they are also physically smaller than any of the others.
Failing that, a 1200 which is still a bit heavier & wider. The B10 will respond exceptionally well to a 1200 engine [you call them A12's] which will pretty much bolt right in.
Use the round port A14 head [with suitable mods for rocker oiling] to get the water heating in the manifold & I still say a single 1-1/2" SU carb on an adapter.

Weight is always the silent killer in the fuel economy stakes & the B310 is your worst choice for that reason alone.

The 3.54 to 1 H150 diferential from some B310 models will fit into the H145 axle housing of the B10 & B110 models, preferably with a spacer & the lower weight will allow you to hang onto the higher gears for longer.

If you're going to build a car specifically for the purpose, then think about starting with the right foundations.

Thanks Dodgeman,

I know you're right but how much heavier were the B310's? 200 lbs. maybe?

My B210 weighed 1855 lbs. at the event weigh in.

I think 1000 coupe is the lightest at about 630kg's and 1200's are all around 700kg's (think coup may be a little lighter?) and I think 310 may hav bin pushing 900kg's witch is allmost 50%more than a 1000!!

edit:conversion's

your 120y 1855lbs=841kg's

700kg=1543lbs

630=1388lbs

and a 1000 coupe would be one of the most aroe dynamic of various sunny's except maybe a 210 coupe witch is a'lot heavyer. and 310 are a nimble as a brick..

The KB10 [1000 coupe] which was never sold in Canada was the heaviest of the B10 family at 675Kg [1,488lbs] while the Standard Two Door Sedan, which WAS sold in Canada, tips the scales at 625Kg. [1378lbs]

A 1200 Coupe weighs in at 690Kg. [1,520lbs] The Four Door is heavier & I do not have a weight for the Two Door.

I do not have a weight spec for any of the B310 models either.

The factory weight for a B10 two door sedan is aproaching a quarter ton LESS than your B210, & the B310 is heavier again.
Even 200lbs extra in the B310 over the B210 is HUGE keeping in mind that the engine must use extra fuel to push it along every time the crankshaft goes round.

How much better could you be if you could shed 477lbs from your B210 & reduce some frontal area too?

Something to ponder.

Thinking some more. I take it the MPG is based on the smaller (than imperial) US Gallons? If so can anyone do the maths to convert to Imperial MPG or KM/Litre or L/100km?

B310 weights:
Sedan A12/A14 - 840~870kg (1850-1930lbs).
2 door - 10 kg lighter
Coupe - same as A14 sedan
Estate 915kg (2020lbs)
North America models - add around 350kg!!

1 US gallon is 3.7854 litres, & one Imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres so you can do the math from there.
As a rough conversion, the Imperial gallon is 20% larger, so add 20% to the mileage figure to get a conversion to what we would see over here.

Those weights are interesting. Why would North American B310's weigh in at 772 lbs [350kg] MORE than other B310's? I mean, that's a LOT of extra weight.

This would mean that a North American B310 two door Sedan with A14 comes in at 2,680 lbs or 1.215 KG. Thats almost a ton & a quarter.

If that was true, & I have my doubts, the B10 two door Sedan comes in with a weight saving of 590kg or 1,301 lbs.
I think that something is amiss here.
